1964 Alfa Romeo giulia spider (LHD)

Highlights

  • Beautifully presented Spider in superb condition
  • Finished in Celeste Blue, one of the nicest colours for these cars
  • Few cars deliver ‘la dolce vita’ quite like an original Giulia Spider
  • Regularly used by the seller and very reliable
  • Carefully maintained and improved by Alfa specialists since imported to UK

The Appeal

Even a quick glance at this pretty Celeste Blue Giulia Spider makes it clear why the owner of this car is regularly stopped in traffic.
When Alfa asked Pininfarina to create a drop-top version of its Giulietta Sprint the results were breathtaking. Arguably one of the most beautiful Italian cars of the 1960s, the Spider is sought after not just for its looks but because it drives as well as it shows.
This 1964 1600cc car was imported from Montpellier by the owner in 2016. Treated to sparing use, it has been carefully maintained by Alfa specialists and always dry stored when not on the road. Mechanically reliable and cosmetically beautiful, it looks as enticing as a mouth-watering gelato.

The History and Paperwork

  • First UK registered on 1st April 2017
  • Imported to the UK from Montpellier by the seller
  • Seller drove the car back from Paris when be bought it
  • Used daily by the seller who reports it is 100% reliable and runs as it should
  • Type 101 Giulia Spider built on the slightly longer 101 platform
  • 1600cc twin cam Alfa Romeo engine
  • MOT expired in December 2017 but dry stored, used and maintained regularly
  • History file includes:
    • Original Cart Grise from previous owner
    • 2016 French Controle Technique inspection document
  • Service and maintenance work undertaken by Alfa specialists
  • Last serviced by Alfa specialist in 2021 with limited use since
  • Gearbox, brake, suspension and driveshaft work undertaken in 2021

The Interior

  • Beautifully original interior with new carpets and re-sprung seats
  • Original dark blue leather seats in very good condition
  • Dark blue carpets are excellent with protective over mats
  • All the switchgear and dials work correctly
  • Rev counter drive replaced recently
  • Period correct radio fitted but we are told it does not work
  • Body colour dashboard in excellent condition
  • Veglia dials in original condition
  • Original door cars present well, just some marks associated with the window winder to note
  • Chrome fittings complete and in good, original condition
  • Beautiful three-spoke Alfa Romeo wheel with original centre boss
  • New Alfa Romeo-branded rubber overmats
The simplicity of the Spider’s interior, with its lack of adornment, only serves to highlight how beautiful it is. The swathe of body colour across the dashboard is particularly attractive in this Celeste Blue car, the paintwork providing a stylish backdrop to the lightly arranged Veglia dials and sparse switchgear.
The interior of this 1964 car is an optimum blend of originality and maintenance with characterful but light patination. The dark blue leather seats appear to be original and in good condition, but have been carefully resprung to ensure they are as comfortable as Alfa intended. Similarly, the dark blue carpets are in excellent condition and protected by new rubber mats.
The door cards appear to be original and are in good, slightly used condition. Then there is the beautiful three-spoke aluminium steering wheel with its black rim and Alfa Romeo boss, which looks superb.
There is also a period correct radio but we understand that it does not work. But in a car as characterful and with such a crackling soundtrack as this one, surely you don’t need it.

The Exterior

  • Wonderful Celeste Blue paintwork in excellent condition
  • Good and consistent panel gaps around the car
  • The car sits level across and along its length reflecting the work on the suspension
  • The car sits slightly lower than standard as the spacers have been removed to improve the stance
  • Photographs of the underside are from 2016 but the car has covered few miles and been dry stored when not in use
  • Fitted car cover included
  • Chromework appears to be original and in good, very presentable condition
  • Original steel wheels with unmarked and undented chrome Alfa Romeo hub caps
  • Later cars like this one had slightly raised bonnet lines to accommodate the larger engine
  • Photographs of the structure indicate that it is in very good condition, likely having been restored
The Celeste Blue paintwork of this beautiful car highlights the rightness of the design. It is a sinuous shape with minimal adornment that is arguably one of the prettiest of 1960s drop top European cars.
This car was bought from Montpellier by the seller in 2016 and would appear to have been restored. With minimal use since and a careful storage regime it presents in exceptional condition. There are some very minor chips and marks on the bodywork but nothing that is immediately visible or detracts from the head-turning impression this car creates. The seller states that he is regularly stopped in the street when he drives it.
The chromework is in good, original condition with good, clean bumpers and steel wheels with chrome hub caps to a similar standard.
Alongside the cosmetics the car sits evenly across its axles, reflecting the suspension work undertaken by Alfa specialists since 2016. The suspension spacers have been taken out so that the car sits slightly lower than standard, which the seller has done to improve the stance.
The car has a fabric roof which we are told is in very good condition and may be original. The seller only ever uses the car with the roof down but says that the roof works correctly.
The photographs of the underside of the car were taken when the car was purchased in 2016. They indicate a structure in very good condition with fresh underseal. We understand that the car has been little used since arriving in the UK. When not in use the car is dry garage stored - as shown in the photographs - and will be sold with its Alfa Romeo-branded fitted car cover.

The Mechanics

  • Characterful 1,597cc version of Alfa’s long-lived twin cam engine
  • 5spd manual gearbox of later Type 101 cars
  • New battery
  • Work by Alfa specialists included:
    • Gearbox work to improve quality of the gear change
    • Gearbox work included replacing worn bearings, mount and synchromesh rings
    • Brakes serviced and bled
    • Front and rear oil seals replaced
    • Driveshaft bearings replaced
    • Rev counter drive replaced
    • Suspension springs and dampers replaced and spacers removed
    • Timing adjusted and carburettors set up
  • Full service undertaken in 2021 and car unused in 2022
The later Spiders such as this one got the more powerful 1600cc version of Alfa’s superlative twin cam engine. Sweet revving and with a delicious soundtrack, these units are known for their durability while their longevity - they were used in Alfas right into the 1990s - means that parts supply is relatively easy and inexpensive.
The engine is mated to slick 5spd gearbox. The seller is the only UK owner and has invested in the car to improve its drivability. This has included partially rebuilding the gearbox to improve the quality of the change and having the suspension springs and dampers overhauled. The car sits slightly lower than standard as the spacers have been removed to enhance the stance.
Other work has included replacing the front and rear oil seals and the driveshaft bearings. The brakes were also serviced and bled in 2021 when the car was last serviced.
The seller states that the car was unused during 2022 but has been in regular use since the start of 2023, including 150 mile fault-free runs. He states that the more he drives it, the more he falls in love with it. However, a change of circumstances forces sale.
The car’s MOT expired December 2017 but the limited use, dry storage regime and recent attentions of Alfa specialists in 2021 indicate careful ownership.

Summary

The Giulia Spider is surely one of Alfa Romeo’s prettiest cars. Practical with a decent size boot and with a spacious cabin it is the drop top Italian car that ticks head and heart boxes.
These cars are wonderful to look at but also to drive. And this achingly beautiful Celeste Blue Spider is surely one of the prettiest we’ve seen. In very good condition with recent, careful attention from Alfa specialists, it is surely very hard to resist.
