The Appeal

Following several years of competition success, Maserati turned their attention to road-going cars, setting their sights upon the burgeoning grand tourer market. Featuring Superlegerra coachwork by Touring of Milan and powered by a race-bred 3.5-litre DOHC straight-six, the 3500 was Maserati’s first foray into luxury GT production and it proved a big hit.
We’re excited to present this beautiful 1962 GTi, the ultimate evolution of the 3500 boasting Lucas fuel injection and a five-speed manual gearbox as standard. Presented in fantastic overall condition and retaining several desirable original features, this Maserati is fit to grace any collection. It benefits from a great deal of recent mechanical work, ensuring that it runs well and is ready to enjoy.

While the 3500 may have been Maserati’s first attempt at a GT car, they certainly didn’t make any mistakes when it came to the looks. Calling upon the services of Carrozzeria Touring was certainly a shrewd decision and this particular example looks particularly good in its factory original silver. Having undergone some restoration work in the past, it remains in very good overall condition, with no notable blemishes to speak of. The trim is really smart too, as are those gorgeous Borrani wheels.
On the inside, the vendor informs us that much of the upholstery is original. The seats are in very good order, as is the carpeting and headlining. The dashboard is free from damage and we understand all held within to be in good working order.

The Mechanics

  • 3.5-litre DOHC twin-spark straight-six
  • Lucas mechanical fuel injection system
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Fuel pump overhauled
  • Fuel tank epoxy-coated
  • All fuel lines and pipes have been renewed
  • The water pump and Girling brakes have recently been overhauled
  • All hoses replaced
  • New clutch and pressure plate installed
  • The vendor reports some noise from the clutch release bearing, although it still operates correctly
  • The Lucas injection system reportedly functions as it should
  • All presents beautifully under the bonnet
Utilising the twin-spark, twin-cam straight-six developed for their race-winning competition cars, the 3500 GTi was immensely powerful for its era, producing 230 bhp in fuel-injected form. The vendor assures us that this example runs very well indeed, still using the original Lucas injection system. Following a great deal of mechanical work, we’re informed that it drives impeccably, with impressive performance, fine handling and a fabulous soundtrack.
