THE APPEAL

Two years before the Nuova 500, Fiat introduced the 600, a revolutionary car that redefined the concept of small family vehicle.

The 600 began its career in 1955 as a replacement for the Fiat Topolino, on the market since 1936 and was the first Fiat with a rear engine and the first great success of the Turin company after the war.

Designed by Dante Giacosa, the 600 was large enough to accommodate four adults, with a domed roof that offered decent headroom even for rear seat passengers and lots of space for the front seats.

Characterized by rounded shapes and the characteristic rear-hinged doors, the 600 had a simple metal dashboard with the speedometer installed in a rational instrument panel right in front of the driver.

The reliable and economical 21 HP water-cooled four-cylinder engine, the first Fiat monobloc engine, combined with a 4-speed manual gearbox, offered good performance for the time and allowed the 600 to tackle even long trips, making it versatile and adaptable to all needs.

Over the years, the 600 was updated with various mechanical and aesthetic improvements, with more powerful engines, new headlights and, starting from the 1964 600 D Second Series, with new front-hinged doors.

This very nice 600 D First Series is a model of great interest, being the latest version still equipped with the pleasant and fascinating rear-hinged doors of the early years, now equipped with vent windows, and the first 600 with the more powerful “750” 29 hp engine.

The car is well presented, with restored bodywork and interior and efficient mechanics that have been always well maintained.

Still equipped with its original plates, this 600 has been kept in a private collection for a few years and has rarely been driven but has been always preserved with the utmost care.

SUMMARY

The Fiat 600 is a car of great historical importance, having been the first true Italian small car after the Second World War and having started mass motorization in Italy.

More versatile and spacious than the 500, it could comfortably accommodate four passengers and their luggage, giving average Italian families the opportunity to move freely for work or leisure for the first time.

With an engine of legendary reliability which, appropriately updated, remained in production for almost fifty years and a sophisticated suspension which equipped Fiat models until the eighties, the 600 was produced in various parts of the world for over twenty years.

This 600 D First Series is a model of great collectible interest, representing a meeting point between the aestethics of early years versions, with the attractive and always desirable rear-hinged doors, and the mechanics of the later models, with the lively 750 engine.
It is also accompanied by its original license plates, which significantly add to its appeal.

Restored with competence and respect, with a bodywork in very good condition with pleasant traces of original patina, a very impressive interior and efficient and solid mechanics, it is an attractive vehicle that is easy and economical to manage, interesting both for the expert collector and for the enthusiast who wants to fulfill the dream of getting behind the wheel of an important piece of Italian motoring history.
