1961 Lancia Flaminia GT 2500 Series 1

Highlights

  • Extensively restored to a very good standard
  • Reportedly one of just 863 Series 1 GTs ever made
  • Fully documented history

The Appeal

The Flaminia succeeded the Aurelia in 1957, and much like its predecessor, it was offered in several configurations. For those after a sports car, the GT was the one to have. Bodied by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan in their trademark ‘Superleggera’ style, the GT was a whopping 200 kgs lighter than its Pininfarina Coupé sibling.
Here we have a superbly maintained 1961 example which has been subject to copious restoration work. It has been rebuilt no fewer than three times in all and has covered a mere 3,000 kilometres since the most recent rebuild was completed. The vendor comments that it drives exceptionally well and is immense fun. It reminds you that Lancia was leagues ahead of the competition during this period.
If you’re looking for a prime example of one of Lancia’s finest sports cars, this is it.

The History and Paperwork

  • The car came to Luxembourg from Switzerland in 1973 and remained there in the possession of a family until 2013 when it came to Germany at the end of that year
  • Two registered keepers since arriving in Germany
  • The owners have kept careful records of events and work for almost fifty years
  • The first major restoration work was carried out as early as 1973, after which it was imported to Luxembourg
  • From 2001-2003, a second comprehensive restoration of the bodywork was commissioned from a Luxembourg specialist and predominantly entailed bodywork
  • From 2013 to 2015, further restoration work was carried out in Germany, including rebuilding all the mechanicals and yet another restoration of the bodywork
  • A Classic Data report from 2016 is also included in the vehicle file, stating a “2 plus” overall grade
  • Used sparingly since the last restoration, covering around 3,000 km only since the last restoration
  • One of just 863 Series 1 GTs according to the vendor
  • German documents (approved as a classic vehicle)
  • Comes with two sets of keys
  • Folders with invoices and documents
  • expertise (of 2016), a workshop manual and owner’s manual (copies).
  • The car is being sold on behalf of the vendor’s private client

The Condition

  • Refinished in its original colour
  • Tight and even panel gaps
  • Straight bodywork with crisp swage lines
  • The body and paintwork is overall very nice. There are some minor blemishes in the paintwork,
  • cracks or small bubbles (see pictures) which do not affect the overall appearance.
  • Brightwork is complete but it could make sense for the next caretaker to have some chromed parts refinished in order to take the car to the next level
  • Very smart and commendably original interior
  • The wooden steering wheel rim shows some patina
Having undergone no fewer than three separate restorations, this Lancia is in very good order, presenting beautifully throughout. The svelte coupé lines continue to turn heads to this day, especially in this handsome silver - the car’s original colour. While there are a few small bubbles in the paint and some localised pitting to the brightwork, this Lancia appears to want for nothing cosmetically. The interior is similarly smart, with no notable wear besides a smattering of patina to the steering wheel.

The Mechanics

  • 2,458 cc V6
  • Four-speed manual gearbox (transaxle)
  • Independent front suspension
  • Mechanicals last overhauled during the 2013-15 restoration
Under the bonnet, this Lancia presents impeccably and we’re assured it’s immensely enjoyable to drive. During the 2013-15 restoration, the engine and gearbox were completely overhauled and the clutch was replaced along with the shock absorbers and exhaust. The braking system was overhauled, as was the carburettor.
With only 3,000 km covered since, we understand this Lancia to be in very good health.
