The Appeal

Built between 1958 and 1961, the Series II was the first major evolution of the original concept and its David Bache-penned lines would be used up until 2016. That makes it a very important vehicle in Land Rover's illustrious history and we're delighted to offer this very usable example from 1960.

In its open-topped configuration, complete with canvas tilt, this Land Rover looks a lot of fun. While it does require some minor work, such as replacing the outriggers and addressing a previous repair on the rear crossmember, it runs very well, is eminently drivable and has been garaged during recent years. It's been refinished in military drab paintwork which really suits its utilitarian design and matches the tine-earned patina of the bodywork.

For those seeking a nice little winter project, this would be a great candidate.

History and Paperwork

  • Rare Series II, supplied to the UK in RHD in 1960
  • 83,030 miles indicated
  • 14 previous registered keepers
  • Purchased from a private seller in April 2022
  • No service book, but service documentation and MOT certificates from 2012 accompany the car
  • The vehicle does not currently have a valid MOT (and is exempt) but the vendor chose to submit it for testing in order to record the faults
  • The MOT found the replacement of outriggers and a couple of patches on the chassis are required
  • We're informed that the Land Rover has been garaged by the last two owners

The Condition

  • Suitably patinated as befits a vehicle of this age and purpose
  • Resprayed sometime in the past few years and is military green
  • The galvanised cappings, screen surround and bumper have been overpainted
  • Complete with its removable door tops
  • Presents well as a 1960 LR Series 2 with many original features
  • The alloy bodywork is commendably straight overall, with just some small dents and creases
  • The photographs suggest the bulkhead is sound and has likely undergone past repair work
  • We're advised that the chassis outriggers require replacement/patching (see photographs)
  • Rear cross member requires further repair following some remedial work completed by a previous owner
  • Many original features; dials have been swapped around in the past and an amp meter fitted rather than a temperature gauge
  • Original frame and canvas includes; some wear to the interior straps that secure the hood internally to the windscreen mounts, however, the hood is otherwise in very

The Mechanics

  • 2.25-litre four-cylinder petrol engine
  • Aftermarket air cleaner fitted in lieu of the original oilbath item
  • Manual transmission with 4 gears plus low-range and selectable four-wheel-drive
  • The vendor notes a leaf spring shackle pin is worn (front nearside)
  • New alternator fitted in May 2023
  • Minor work required to replace the outriggers and to remedy a previous repair on the rear cross member
  • The vendor informs us that the Land Rover drives very well indeed
