1959 Chevrolet Parkwood Station Wagon Lowrider – 283ci V8

**Vendor supplied images**

Highlights

  • US import in 2015
  • Dutch registration
  • Very rare vehicle
  • Extensively customised
  • Hydraulic ‘lowrider’ system
  • 283ci V8 engine

The Appeal

The station wagon equivalent of the Bel-Air saloons, the Parkwood was the middle specification in the range and offered a deeply practical three-bench, nine-passenger layout. Combined with the hearty V8 drivetrains and Jetsons style futurism of the styling, they make for an eye-catching machine.

These days they’re vanishingly rare too. Only produced and sold in the States for three years, few remain on the road, and even fewer have made it to European shores.
This example was imported to the Netherlands in 2015 and has been extensively customised by the current owner, both cosmetically and mechanically. If you’re after something that really stands out from the crowd, this certainly does that…

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in February 1959
  • 34,153 miles indicated (five-figure odometer)
  • Very rare machine - only built for three years
  • Imported to Europe from the US in October 2015
  • One owner since import
  • Dutch registered
  • Maintenance records are available on request

The Interior

  • Original blue/green vinyl seating is covered with striped, multi-coloured throw cloths
  • Orange door cards and bright orange fur-style headlining
  • Black carpets run through the cabin
  • Unique air-brush work to the inner rear tailgate
  • Triple bench layout, with rear-facing third bench
  • Custom painted silver and orange dashboard, with extra gauges installed in the centre
  • Modern Pioneer CD/radio system with USB and Aux connection
  • There is quite a lot of wear and patination evident throughout the interior of the car, particularly to the instruments and switchgear
  • The tanks, pumps and batteries for the hydraulic system have been installed in clear view in the rear of the vehicle

The Exterior

  • Originally finished in blue, the car now wears a “rat look” finish
  • There are numerous marks, blemishes, areas of surface corrosion and dents across the entire body of the car
  • The brightwork and external trim appears to all be present, and has been augmented with many embellishments by the owner
  • Most of the brightwork is pitted and shows some evidence of surface corrosion
  • Rare ‘Trail Master’ chrome finish spotlights are mounted to each front door
  • At the rear, the spare wheel cover has been garnished with some custom air brush work
  • Some pinstriping detail has been added to the bonnet and tailgate
  • A chrome roof rack is installed, and bears some surface corrosion
  • It’s good to see the glass intact, especially the front and rear windscreens, as these are very rare pieces to acquire
  • Chrome spoked wheels with glitter finish centres and white wall tyres
  • The wheels show some signs of pitting to the chrome

The Mechanics

  • Fitted with the 283ci (4,638cc) ‘Turbo Fire’ naturally aspirated V8
  • Under the bonnet, the engine looks fairly clean and tidy, although most components show some evidence of surface corrosion or wear
  • Three-speed ‘TH350’ automatic transmission
  • LPG installation
  • Front-to-back CCE Hydraulics with Optima batteries

Summary

Some people like to keep themselves to themselves and not draw too much attention. This is not a car for those people, as it is sure to elicit open-mouthed staring wherever it goes. An incredibly rare car outside of the US, this fine old Station Wagon is ready and waiting for its new owners to enjoy as is, or use as the basis for a restoration to factory specifications.
