The Appeal

The original Sunbeam Alpine was developed with competition in mind and indeed it proved a successful rally car in the hands of none other than Stirling Moss and a whole host of other great drivers of the era..

MK1 examples are a rare find and the vendor believes fewer than 200 still exist worldwide. This delightful 1953 Alpine, finished in Coronation Red, has been well maintained following an extensive restoration.

The car's rarity is a significant draw, but it's the condition and history that truly set it apart. The comprehensive restoration in 2002, recent re-carpeting, and ongoing maintenance by the current owner, who has cherished the car for 21 years, all contribute to its appeal. The car's history file is impressive, including the original log book and details of all work carried out.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered in 1953
  • Only 1,582 Alpines were produced between 1953 and 1955, with only 402 made for the home market. It's understood that fewer than 200 survive worldwide today
  • Purchased by the current owner in 2003 after a complete restoration in 2002
  • The original log book shows 3 former registered keepers in addition to the 3 Sunbeam Talbot Alpine Register club owners, including the current owner
  • The total mileage is unknown as the odometer is not presently working

The Condition

  • The bodywork appears in smart condition for its age
  • All chrome parts present well
  • The hood and tonneau cover are in fine fettle, with the hood featuring a zip-out rear window
  • The seats were completely recovered with leather during the 2002 restoration and show signs of use since then
  • There are a few minor paint issues upon close inspection, but they do not detract from the overall appearance
  • The car was professionally re-carpeted in 2021, including the entire boot area
  • The car has a tailored cover and is stored in a secure wooden garage when not in use
  • The car could benefit from 2 new tyres due to wear from previously worn kingpins which were replaced last year
  • The headlights have been upgraded to halogen lamps and the brake lights replaced with red LEDs

The Mechanics

  • Engine capacity of 2,267cc
  • Manual transmission with 4 + overdrive on 4th gear
  • The gearbox has been replaced with an overdrive unit that operates on top gear
  • The original engine was replaced with a professionally rebuilt MK3 engine after a catastrophic failure

  • The car has been converted to negative earth and the dynamo replaced with an alternator
  • The carburettor has been replaced with a new Weber unit
  • The car is capable of keeping up with modern traffic and has been driven to Monte Carlo and Cortina in Italy, including through the famous Stelvio Pass
