THE APPEAL
The Studebaker M series enjoyed considerable demand until March 1948, resulting in the production of 145,800 vehicles of this type. This number was three times greater than the total number of commercial Studebaker trucks produced before that period. However, despite this success, Studebaker strategically decided to replace the M series with the introduction of the 2R series trucks in April 1948, ultimately becoming the company's most successful truck line in its history.
This 1949 example has undergone some subtle improvements that have enhanced this iconic American classic. The most striking of these improvements is the paintwork, which truly shines in the sunlight. The interior has also received a comfortable retrim that is in good condition, and the engine has recently been recommissioned to ensure everything is in good working order.
The HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Unfortunately, there was no paperwork present when the car was photographed
- It is currently registered on Dutch license plates
The INTERIOR
- Original features
- Retrimmed seats
- Wooden-lined cargo area
Inside the Studebaker, the trim has been recovered in red material, which provides a nice contrast with the gloss black exterior. The bench seat is in good condition, with minimal signs of wear, except for a small mark towards the centre of the seat base. The matching door cards are undamaged.
The black metal dashboard retains the original instruments and switchgear, all of which are functioning correctly. The odometer displays a reading of 81,020 miles, and while there is some minor patina on some of the switches, it's minimal considering the truck's age. The original steering wheel is covered with a leather cover, which is in good condition.
The cab floor area is carpeted and has seen very little use. The pickup bed is finished with wood, and this can be covered with the vinyl cover, which is in good condition.
The EXTERIOR
- Finished in gloss black with a purple tint
- Well-presented
- Upgraded wheels
- Sunvisor
Inspecting the Studebaker's bodywork reveals it to be in excellent shape, with panels aligning nicely and straight with consistent gaps. The gloss black paintwork with a purple tint and metallic flake truly comes alive in the sunlight. There are a few minor scratches and chips here and there, typical of age-related wear since the pickup was repainted.
Starting at the front, the chrome work for the bumper and headlight surrounds are in excellent condition. Additional spotlights have been added and are also in good order. The windshield is free from damage, and a sunvisor is mounted to the roof. The chrome mirrors, door handles, and driver's mounted searchlight are in good condition.
Inspecting the sides of the Studebaker reveals no dings or dents on the doors or colossal wheel arches, and everything appears to be in good order. At the rear, the deck lid has been highlighted in red; this drops down and is held in place with two chains that can be unclipped. The rear light lenses are free from splits or cracks, and the chrome bumper has a bright finish.
Custom split-rim wheels have been fitted, which are wider than standard. They are in good condition, with black centres and some minor tarnishing on the rims. The matching BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires have plenty of tread remaining.
The Mechanics
- 259 cubic inch small-block V8
- Manual gearbox
- Recently recommissioned
The 259 Cu In V8 starts up without hesitation and exits through just two silencers, one on each bank, enhancing the sound of the V8. It is mated to a manual gearbox with a column shift gear change, which operates.
The pickup sits slightly lower than a standard Studebaker, giving it an excellent stance. The engine bay and underside appear to be in good order, with no leaks observed around the engine. Some suspension components show minor surface corrosion, but given the truck's 75 year old age, it remains in excellent condition.
