The Appeal

The name is a good indicator. Alfred Angas Scott was a man who did different and that applied equally to the name he gave his long-lived 600cc bike as the way he engineered it. The Flying Squirrel is considered a more conventional Scott, but is hardly mainstream: after all, it had water cooling and two-stroke power in an air-cooled, four-stroke world. And that’s before we mention the ‘wobbly walking stick’ gear change.
The engine delivered decent low-down power, which made the Flying Squirrel competitive at the Isle of Man TT where it took third in 1929. Its rugged reliability earned popularity with trials enthusiasts.
Initially launched in 1926, Flying Squirrel production briefly restarted after the War when this bike was built. There have been just three registered keepers since it hit the road in March 1947, passing to the seller’s father - the second keeper - in 1983. He lovingly restored the bike over several years, carefully retaining its distinctive Scott features.
His daughter is reluctantly selling the bike and hopes that it will go to a buyer who is equally enthusiastic about these much-admired British bikes. It will need some recommissioning. This is a magnificent bike with a wonderful story and we wish it well on the next stage of its life.

  • We are told that the engine did run when inherited by the seller in May 2020
  • The vendor reports that it does not run now so will require recommissioning
  • Bike appears to be mechanically complete but has been unused for some time
  • The buyer should anticipate checking over and likely recommissioning this bike
