Charming example, nicely presented in oily rag condition
Excellent piece of Rover history
One of the last pre war Rover models built
The Appeal
Rover’s final pre war saloon is a marvellous presentation of what made the marque one of the most highly regarded premium automakers of the era. A grandiose slice of old England, the Rover 10 was an excellent luxury car with room for the whole daily. Well designed, and lavishly equipped for the era, the 10 sings of a time of quality British craftsmanship and is a significant slice of Rover history.
This 1938 10 is a rather interesting car, hailing from the transition point between the P1 and P2 iterations of the model.Rather well preserved in a charming oily rag condition, it comes to market as an entirely cosmetically usable honest well loved classic Rover, but one that simultaneously lends itself well to a possible restoration or aesthetic overhaul if one was looking for a classic pre war Rover to take in that direction.
The History and Paperwork
First registered 04/08/1938
Current registered keeper since 2012
Hailing from 1938 this is understood to be a P1/P2 transition car
Tax and MOT exempt due to the car’s age and historic tax status
V5 registration document present with the vehicle
Some investigation suggests that this car was originally penned for export but because of the outbreak of the war it remained a home market car
The Condition
Great example of the model, presented in classic oily rag condition
Finished in a two tone green and black exterior colour scheme
As we understand the car may have originally been grey but was subject to a colour change in its early life
Paintwork is has a wonderful charm to it with an honest well earned patina
Rather unusually the car comes sat on pressed steel road wheels, which were a feature of Rover’s penned for export; a fifth spare wheel resides in the rear mounted carrier
External trim is of a similar standard to the rest of the car’s bodywork, exhibiting a lovely patina commensurate with age
Glass work, lights and badging are of a good quality
Interior mirrors this oily rag, honestly patinaed appearance
Internal trim, fascias and wood panelling are all of a good quality
Interior switchgear and gauges are in clean shape
Cable operated rear window blind
Wind out opening front windscreen
Leather upholstered seats front and rear
Clean, well fitting headliner with overhead cargo/map nets
The Mechanics
1.4 litre four cylinder engine
Four speed manual transmission
Engine and surrounding engine bay present well
The Rover starts and drives, firing into life comfortably via use of the push button starter
The car starts relatively easily, sounds well and drives with no obvious faults being evident other than those noted, however this vehicle is being auctioned as needing a good going over before any use as there may be additional faults which are not noted
The vendor informs us of some clutch judder when setting off from a stand still
Summary
An alluring presentation of a truly great Rover and one of the best pre war family saloon cars. This 1938 Rover 10 is a true charmer.
In honest, lovable oily rag condition this is one that's comfortably ready to be enjoyed by a committed enthusiast in its largely original form. But if you’re in the market for a candidate for a restoration or light project, this is one that holds excellent potential to become a true stand out showpiece and element of pre war motoring history.
