1935 Plymouth PJ Businessman Coupe

Highlights

  • Only two recorded owners from new
  • Highly evocative two-tone colour scheme
  • Complete with rumble seat
  • In current ownership since 1985

The Appeal

1935 had Plymouth at the top of their game. The sales literature was catchy in the way only the Americans could provide - “Fun - Action - Thrills - Find them in a Plymouth!” - and managed to shift a remarkable 350,000 cars. They were in the top three bestselling American car brands in 1935 - a winning formula of capable I6 powerplants, attractive styling and low prices.
This remarkable example arrived in the UK in 1985, and was restored with a new colour scheme in 1993. Presented in remarkable fettle, the car commands plenty of attention as a truly top-notch pre-war American classic.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1935
  • The vendor informs us that the car first arrived in the UK in 1985
  • We note upon a HPI check that:
    • The car is registered under its rebadged UK form, the Chrysler Wimbledon
    • The car is down as ‘first registered’ in 2038
    • The car is listed with two previous owners
  • Car was repainted in 1993, according to the DVLA
  • MOT exempt with no tests on record
  • Currently indicates 37,263 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • Sadly we can’t verify the car’s true mileage
  • Kept garaged for much of its recent life
  • We’ve not been informed of any paperwork provided with the vehicle

The Condition

  • Impressive pre-war bodywork in excellent order
  • Stylish beige two-tone paintwork that’s bright and nicely kept
  • Panel fit is excellent with no unseemly gaps
  • A small chip is visible on the wing but no other faults stand out
  • Period grille with distinctive Mayflower hood ornament
  • Some light patina to the chrome, though it doesn’t detract from the car
  • Car is sat on colour-matched wheels with a set of whitewall Firestone tyres
  • Underside is solid and nicely kept
  • The interior is excellent with only gentle wear to the upholstery
  • No signs of rips or tears
  • Door cards are in good, clean order
  • The dashboard is in good order with nicely-presented contrast instruments
  • The fuel gauge is reportedly not working
  • All interior chromework is nicely kept
  • Floor mats look in good shape

The Mechanics

  • 2.7L 6-cylinder engine
  • 3-speed manual transmission
  • Engine bay in good order
  • The vendor notes that the engine is turning over but has no spark on the plugs
  • They recommend that the car needs a good bit of TLC to bring it back to the road
  • After a bit of work, we’ve no doubt this will be a truly spectacular classic
