The Volkswagen Scirocco is a car derived from the Volkswagen Golf, from which it takes all the mechanics and the platform, which was marketed by the German brand Volkswagen from 1974 to 1988 in France, and until 1992 in Germany. Named after a violent, very dry and very hot Saharan wind that blows over North Africa (cf. Sirocco), the name is often the subject of controversy between supporters of the masculine and feminine genders when describing the Scirocco coupé: this article therefore uses the two expressions "the Scirocco" and "the Scirocco" interchangeably to refer to this vehicle.
There have been two successive Scirocco models: the Scirocco Mk1, produced from April 1974, was replaced by the Scirocco Mk2 from May 1981. Following the presentation of an Iroc concept car in 2006, Volkswagen announced the arrival of a third version of the Scirocco coupé in 2008. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981 and marketed from May onwards, the second Scirocco model appeared before the Golf 2. The Scirocco evolved both inside and out, with rounder lines that were in vogue at the time, but which failed to win unanimous approval because they lacked personality. More powerful engines were used, in particular the very good 1, 800 cm3 112 bhp, topped by a 139 bhp 1, 800 cm3 16-valve fuel-injected engine which, unfortunately, proved to be less flexible, giving less acceleration than the 112 bhp. Total production of the Scirocco 2 was 291, 497 units. That's almost 800, 000 Scirocco 1 and 2 units built over 18 years, which is a remarkable figure for a car of this type.
