Description
History: In 1971, the tried-and-tested BMW 2800 CS was replaced by the new 3. 0 CS and 3. 0 CSI models, with displacement increased to 2986cc. While the former retained carburettor power to deliver 180 bhp, the latter adopted mechanical fuel injection to achieve 200 bhp. The 3. 0 CSL (the 'L' standing for leicht, i. e. light) used the same 180 bhp carburettor engine as the CS, and was distinguished by chromed wheel arches, slimmer bumpers painted matt black and a black side stripe. The interior, with the exception of the leather and fabric sports seats and the racing-style steering wheel, was identical to that of the normal versions, but the key difference was the reduced weight achieved by the use of aluminium for the bodywork and Plexiglas for the windows, making the car ideal for racing. When the CS was presented to the public, Road & Track magazine described it as "probably the most sophisticated in-line six in the world". Despite being designed as a fast, comfortable grand tourer, the 3. 0 CSL went on to become one of the most successful racing coupes of all time. A special version of the 3. 0 CSL was homologated to take part in the European Touring Car Championship, which greatly enhanced BMW's reputation as a sports car manufacturer thanks to the numerous titles it won. A total of 1, 200 examples were produced between 1971 and 1975.
