Description

Moto Guzzi Le Mans 2, (950cc)

For sale due to another project, is my beautifully restored 1979 850 Le Mans mark 2.

This bike was originally registered on 11/ 07/ 79 as the demonstrator at “Three Cross motorcycles”, in Wimborne , Dorset.

On 26/ 04/ 80 it was sold to a Mr Allen Dowling of Trowbridge who kept the bike until it was sold to me via “Muzzi Moto” as part of his estate.

It was taken off the road in 1995, and left for someone, ie Me, to restore. The bike had 41, 775 miles on the clock when it was laid up.

I began the restoration when I purchased it in May 2019, and completed it in May 2024. 5 years and a cost of £15, 000. It's an over used cliche, but it has to be one of the best 850 Le Mans you will ever see.

Nothing has been left untouched, and apart from the paint, and any machining, and a gearbox rebuild, all the work has been done by myself. Final setting up on a dyno’ was left to Jason at “Lee Motorcycles”, in Ledbury. Please read the following description of the work carried out, and if you need to know more, just ask.
Note, the mileage may increase if the sun comes back out again!Engine:
Completely stripped and rebuilt with new HD duty timing chain with auto tensioner. Sump extension, New barrels with Hi Comp’ 950cc pistons, new exhaust valves and followers. Finished as o. e. m, with new polished cam covers and new seals and gaskets throughout.

Clutch and gearbox:
New upgraded clutch and release bearing, gearbox rebuilt by Nigel at NBS Guzzi, with new bearings where required. All new seals and gaskets. Again, casings finished to o. e. m spec’.

Fuel/ Exhaust:
Both Dellorto carb’s renewed, as old ones had corroded beyond repair., polished alloy bell mouths, fuel lines and taps replaced. All to original spec’ , Fuel tank lined with ethanol proof liner as precaution. Keihan stainless exhaust fitted.

Ignition:
Electronic Saches programmable ignition fitted, which removes the need for the hard to get at Distributor, which is blanked off, along with electrex world Reg/ rectifier and upgraded alternator. No more illuminated charge lights at idle. New spark plugs, “Taylor” leads and Dyna coils. Moto batt HD battery, all fed by a brand new wiring loom. Nothing is left of the original spaghetti usually found under the seat and side panels of a Guzzi from this era except for the renovated fuse box.

Drive shaft:
New universal joint, all new bearings and seals throughout, and Final drive also rebuilt with new bearings and seals. Ditto the swing arm bearings.

Electrics:
All standard Le Mans fittings retained, and in full working order, including the switchgear. New loom fitted, as mentioned earlier. All new bulbs throughout, and separate earth bar.

Brakes:
Standard Brembo calipers rebuilt with new pistons and seals, pads, new M/ Cyl’ piston and seals, HEL braided lines and new front disc’s and all pads renewed. Linked braking system retained.

Chassis:
Frame and all ancillary components have been satin powder coated, and rust proofed.
Rear shock absorbers, adjustable for preload and rebound by “Shock Factory”, and front forks rebuilt with worth springs, FAC air adjustable cartridges, new seals, and original stanchions hard chromed by A. M. Philpott. Steering head bearings are new taper head roller type. New steering damper.

Paintwork:
All bodywork has been renovated to a superb original finish by “Dream Machine”, including the satin finished black as per factory. The seat is also new, so no rips or tears, and all rubber components have been replaced.

Wheels:
New bearings throughout, powder coated, and correct imperial sized tubed tyres fitted. Bridgestones.

General:
99% of the fasteners have been replaced with machined stainless steel. Those that could not be replaced were bright zinc plated or chrome plated. All control cables renewed.

No stone has been left unturned with this restoration. I wanted this bike to look better than the day it left the Mandello factory with a few subtle improvements to enhance ownership.

I have done around 750 miles since the rebuild, so it is still being run in, but has proved faultless and starts, runs, and performs exactly as it should

I have a record of the build on a memory stick, as well as every bill, the old log book and workshop manuals and parts list. Lots of new and used parts are included in the price. Over £700 worth of spares are included in the above price.
This is a genuine Mark 2, probably one of the first in the uk as I believe 3x may have been the Guzzi importers at the time, (Not confirmed).
Collection only, sorry no test rides. UK buyer only please.
