This is my much-loved MK2 GTI, which I’ve owned and enjoyed as my only car for the past few years. It’s been totally reliable, fun to drive, and a joy to own. Powered by the original 1. 8 PB engine and 020 gearbox, it’s mostly standard and always garage-kept during my ownership.
The car is finished in the rare LP5T Blauschwarz metallic, with the iconic rainbow interior in excellent condition—no rips or tears. The paintwork looks good overall and shines up nicely, but there’s some lacquer peel on the roof and a few marks as you'd expect for a 33-year-old car.
Mechanically, it’s in excellent condition. It recently had a new starter motor, alternator, ignition coil, and battery. Brakes have been refreshed with new pads, discs, and upgraded Mk3 callipers. The car has always driven beautifully - it's even done a full trip to Belgium and back without issue. The underside is waxoyl’d and very clean.
The previous owner also invested in solid mechanical upkeep, including a new clutch and cable, engine mounts, hoses, master cylinder, solid pipes, and wishbones. Between us, there’s a decent record of service history, even if it’s not full.
In terms of comfort and usability, I added sound deadening and weatherproofed the doors. A flip-out touchscreen stereo brings in Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Other features include power steering, electric front windows, a working immobilizer, rust-free sunroof, smoked rear lights, 16” Calibre Vintage BBS-style wheels, and 20mm lowering springs (original springs included in the sale).
There are a few quirks to be aware of. The car occasionally won’t start with the key, but starts every time by jumping the starter motor. I suspect it's something minor - ignition switch or relay - but haven’t had time to diagnose it properly. There’s also some rust at the rear lights and starting to show around scuttle panel. The rear wiper and central locking aren’t working, though I’m including a spare wiper motor and locking pump.
This car gets compliments wherever it goes. I’m only selling because I don’t use it enough to justify keeping it, and I’d rather see it enjoyed than tucked away in the garage.
