This superb Austin Sports, in April 2024, won car of the show at the Malvern Festival of Transport.
The Austin A40 Sports is a Jenson bodied Austin Devon and its production enabled Jensen to produce their first Interceptor, note the similarity in design. About 4000 were made, in aluminium, on a steel chassis most were exported. Of the very few that remain on the roads in this country VTW555 is possibly one of the best.
It was restored between 2009 and 2019 when its mileage was 69011 and when over £45000 had been spent, its mileage now is 71050.
In 2009 all its body panels were in good condition requiring little work. When it was reassembled great care was taken to achieve excellent fit and alignment.
As well as the work that would normally be part of a restoration, I. e. work to the body, suspension, engine, gearbox etc the following upgrades were carried out :
The front suspension was fitted with poly bushes and roller trunnions top bearings.
The ignition polarity was changed so that so that an alternator could be fitted along with electronic ignition.
The oil filter was changed to a renewable cartridge system.
A stainless steel exhaust was fitted.
New fuel lines were fitted to an electronic pump serviced by a new stainless steel tank.
New rear springs were fitted together with uprated shock absorbers front and rear.
An Austin Healey back axle was fitted and the Speedo recalibrated.
A brake servo was added to the completely overhauled braking system.
Halogen headlights were installed. As were flashing indicators.
Seat belts were fitted front and back.
The full history of the car is known from new. The original sales invoice is present along with all invoices for the restoration and for any work done since then.
