Description

Superb condition 1952 vintage AJS M18s 500cc single cylinder classic motorcycle.

I have owned this bike for 8 years. It had evidently been comprehensively restored by a previous owner although details of the restoration had unfortunately been lost. The bike still looks in really excellent condition to this day, I would describe it as almost but not quite 'trailer queen', and very sorted and rideable.

All the tinware, hubs and frame look to have been powder coated or stove enamelled. Many fastenings are stainless steel as are the wheel spokes and brake rod. The chrome wheel rims have painted and pinstriped centres. The paint on the tank is smooth, the pinstripes look to have been hand painted. The engine runs sweetly, the gearbox is good.
The petrol tank has been painted inside, looks rust free and has not been coated with any liner.

The bike starts first or second kick, there is no smoke or rattles and the engine is quiet. Everything works as it should, the bike is a joy to ride.

I have fitted the stainless crash bar, led lamps front and rear, carry rack, Rob Swift easy lift centre stand, had a 'leg' welded onto the sidestand so you can find it (!) and performed all routine servicing.

I have recently fitted a new glassmat battery (6v, positive earth) as the battery I fitted in 2016 had expired.

During the lockdown I fitted the sprung saddle seat, which I think suits the bike much more. The dual seat would have been an optional extra back in 1952. It is included in the sale.

Also included are the original centrestand, an original maintenance manual for the 1952 model, photocopies of the parts and manuals and the original buff logbook (laminated).

The V5 is in my name (6 former keepers). The bike is registed as an historic vehicle, the DVLA lists the bike as originally registered in 1952, the number plate is original and transferable.

The bike displays a copy of it's original 1952 road tax disc.

The Smiths chronometric speedo currently shows 03761 miles, which may increase slightly as sunny days are upon us.

I have never managed to seal the primary chaincase perfectly so she does drip a little after a run.
