Stunning 1973 MG Midget – Heritage Shell & High Spec
I’ve owned this Midget since 1986 and after using it as my daily driver, I totally rebuilt the car around a new Heritage shell using new or reconditioned parts. I also made improvements to make the car more fun and reliable to drive whilst still retaining that classic MG look and feel.
The car is in excellent condition both inside and out.
Round Wheel Arch Design: In many people’s eyes, this is the most desirable of Midgets featuring round wheel arches, complemented by chrome bumpers and wire wheels.
Rebuilt with Heritage Shell: Completely restored in the 1990s using a brand-new heritage shell and it is still rust free. It was a total nut and bolt restoration with new or reconditioned parts throughout. The underneath was undersealed which has protected it from rust however there are now a couple of areas of underseal that will require attention.
Exterior: Finished in damask red with matching red carpets. The paint work is in excellent condition apart from a few minor marks that will need touching up.
Wire wheels: these were new when fitted and are still in excellent condition. The tyres have plenty of tread on them.
Chrome work: this was either new or reconditioned and now has the patina of older chrome.
Interior: Immaculate bespoke magnolia leather seats and panels, with contrasting red trim to match the paintwork. The steering wheel has been replaced with a leather version better suiting the car.
Mohair Hood: Premium quality mohair hood with no rips or tears.
Engine: it’s fitted with a fast road engine which runs on unleaded and has been rebored to 1440cc, fitted with an uprated cylinder head, lightened flywheel, balanced and an uprated camshaft. I wanted a car that could be used on the road and in traffic so I went for a camshaft upgrade that is usable throughout the rev range. The engine performs very well, though there is a minor oil leak that has not affected its usability.
Exhaust: The performance manifold and exhaust provide an increase in performance and how the car sounds.
Gearbox: reconditioned when fitted and the shifting is still excellent.
Suspension: the front suspension has a stiffer anti-roll bar and springs to reduce the tendency to oversteer. The rear has been upgraded with telescopic dampers. This provides better and sharper handling but not at the expense of harshness.
Extras: Kevlar brake pads, K&N air filters, Aldon electronic ignition, oil cooler, Kenlowe electronic fan, uprated fuel pump / regulator.
Comes with both full and half tonneau – these are original so the half tonneau has some wear. This MG Midget has been cherished since I bought it in the 1980s. The condition and modifications make it a unique and highly desirable vehicle that stands out from other MG Midgets on the market.
