Description
This is a very rare 4/ 4 four-seater with a 1585 cc 98 BHP Fiat twin cam engine, 5-speed gearbox and aluminium body panels - could well be one of less than 10 built. A stunning car in Sky Blue and black leather with chrome wire wheels, it drives really well.
It was bought from Melvyn Rutter Limited as a rolling restoration in 2007, with six previous owners.
Taken to France and re-registered, it was used as a second Morgan for several years, then stripped down to the bare chassis and rebuilt from the bottom up between 2018 and 2021.
There is a fully documented service history for 30 years from 1995. It is MOT and road tax exempt but has an MOT valid until September 2025. More than £25, 000 has been spent on the restoration and nearly 2000 hours of workshop time logged. The mileage is 79, 650 of which 1600 since going back on the road.
This restoration was a project of passion for me, the engineer owner, with high standards a must (eg all fastenings in stainless steel to the original UNC/ AF, BSF/ BSW or metric sizes). The opportunity was also taken to improve the brakes and suspension and therefore driveability. All costs are documented, and a detailed specification is available on request. The summary spec is:
Aluminium body dismantled, stripped to bare metal before respraying. Chassis shot blasted, hot zinc spray, epoxy base coat, black powder coat. All chrome re-chromed or replaced. Leather restored or replaced. All new Everflex weather gear.
Rutherford rear suspension conversion. Leaf springs modified. Avo shock absorbers front and rear. Bespoke front springs.
New brake lines. 4-pot HiSpec front calipers. Gemma steering box.
Engine head skimmed and flowed manifold. Various new parts plus detailing. New stainless steel 2 to 1 downpipe and exhaust.
Lights mostly replaced. Loom mostly retained but all connectors replaced. Instruments renovated..
History
When I bought this car it was showing its mileage at 71, 000. The documentation was pretty good and included a copy of the original Morgan build log.
Correspondence from a previous owner indicated that it had travelled far and wide including to Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Nevertheless, it served well for 10 years in France as a second Morgan to my 1993 +4. As always, the restoration turned out to be a much more extensive and costly project than the original estimates. Fortunately, neither the chassis, ash frame nor bodywork had major defects, although some repairs were needed. The later stages of restoration were carried out in England, with the car reregistered with its original registration. That is why it is flagged as "Ever been imported".
Personally I prefer this car to my +4. It’s much nimbler and has more character, besides the stunning colour.
