Description
1933 Lagonda ST24A 3 litre Pillarless Saloon
Built in the penultimate year of 3 litre production this handsome pillar-less saloon bodied Lagonda is one of just 580 produced between 1928 and 1934. Highly regarded in period for its comfort and driveability it produced a healthy 78bhp with plenty of torque. Built in 1933 and registered in January 1934 this example was first purchased by a Group Captain in the RAF who in kept it until 1957 when it was sold to its second owner, for £57. It was used as the family car until the early 1960s, when it was parked up in a wartime prefab shed. There it remained stored until 2009 whereupon it was disinterred and offered at auction as a candidate for restoration. Purchased by the Seller in 2012 it was found to be complete down to its original engine and gearbox. He embarked on a sympathetic restoration, with remedial work to the ash frame, a complete repaint and the addition of a delightful Cathedral glass sliding roof that functions perfectly. The entire interior was re-trimmed in the correct Art Deco style, and this has now aged nicely whilst remaining in superb condition. The “Silent Travel” pillarless body allows easy access to both front and rear seats. All four doors close properly and the panel gaps are impressively aligned. Trimmed in red leather, with matching red carpets and roof lining the interior is a “tour de force” of period detail. The glass sliding roof allows plenty of light and adds to the 1930s ambience and can give the fun of feeling like an open car. The entire dashboard was removed and carefully restored with refurbished instruments and switches. The exterior chrome was re-plated and the 19inch spoked wheels were restored, powder coated and fitted with the correct tyres.
Mechanically the Lagonda is in excellent condition. The engine was treated to a mild upgrade with a John Ryder sports camshaft and a tuned sports exhaust. The carburettors were dismantled and refurbished, along with the magneto and starter motor, and the car was completely re-wired. Further mechanical tuning took place on a rolling road and it now produces a documented 80bhp from the twin carburettor 3 litre. It is used regularly and is a delight to drive; the Seller has enjoyed plenty of longer trips to the West Country and regular use locally.
There is a substantial amount of history on file, with bills and invoices from the early 1950s onwards, lubrication and wiring diagrams, an original handbook and plenty of period paperwork and correspondence. I bought an amazing and impressive car with character and dignity, then needing restoring and using. It is unique being a graceful, charming and stylish car being very good fun and engrossing to drive. I love the way she looks, her period charming details and the pleasure of driving her.
