A40 Advert
1963 Austin A40 Farina
For those looking for a classic car which is low maintenance, an abundance of spares, a knowledgable owners club and a lot of potential for modifications to suit the owner, an Austin A40 is exactly that. Low insurance costs and being Tax and MOT Exempt also make the car inexpensive to own.
This car is a Mark 2 A40 Farina with the 1098 A series engine and 4 speed gearbox. It remains in the original vision and work completed over its 61 year life has to maintain rather than modify. It does have the original charm of a 1960’s car.
The car odometer is showing just under 75000 miles although this is unverified.
The car has been previously repaired and corrosion addressed with new panels before being repainted meaning this car provides a solid basis to take on another significant period of time, or a great base car for historic motorsport.
Smaller jobs have been kept on top of, with new brake pipes, brake cylinders and exhaust recently.
This really is a very useable classic. After it’s winter garaging the car started without any outside assistance and drove for 30 minutes without issues.
The interior is original if well used, which led to the previous owner to recover the front seats albeit in a contrasting coloured fabric. The rear panels are with the car but haven’t been put back since it was repainted.
Overall condition is fair to good but useable with the ability to make adjustments over time.
It drives well, obviously very differently to a modern car but has been reliable in my ownership.
Areas left for improvement - The original interior is faded and starting to become discoloured by the use and 60 years of use.
The headlining is discoloured, seemingly from previous storage, but could be changed to a new owners preference relatively cheaply.
The paint re spray which looks good overall, could have been done better in the odd place.
Couple of drips of oil under the engine, not a concern but worth knowing to avoid marks on the garage floor. I bought the car 2 years ago as I wanted to help the previous owner and make sure the car survived rather than being left somewhere to deteriorate. I have corrected the majority of minor issues from when I bought it so it is now useable and I’ve enjoyed owning it.
