Description
1978 Ford Capri 1. 6 GL Mk 3 1600 Manual in Metallic Cosmos Blue.
Only 33. 8k miles from new.
'On the button' and ready to use.
Timewarp survivor with immaculate interior, low mileage and remarkably sound bodywork.
Supplied new on 1st June 1978 by E. Ward Ltd, the Ford main dealer in Wellingborough. The original purchase invoice is in the file. The first owner paid £3, 641. 77, which included £28. 50 for 'Undersealing Vehicle' which helps to explain how well it has survived.
The car was owned by one family for 38 years from 1978 to 2016. During that time it appears to have been transferred from father to son and then back to the father again, accounting for the first three named owners in the V5C history. The person who bought it from that family kept it for 5 years from 2016 to 2021. It then spent seven months with another owner until I bought it in June 2022.
The car was thoroughly inspected and serviced when I bought it in June 2022, and I had the car serviced and MOT'd again in June 2023 at 33, 749 miles. The car has done less than 100 miles since that service and the mileage currently stands at 33, 833.
The car comes with its original sales invoice, owners handbook, operating guides, and service booklet that confirms the low mileage. It also has a file of V5C and MOT history paperwork, and 24 of the original tax discs. There are two original Ford keys and an original Capri locking filler cap with two keys.
The interior of the car is immaculate and original. You'll see in the photos just how good the seat fabric, carpet and roof lining are. There are no cracks in the dashboard and the car has its original parcel shelf which has never been cut for speakers. Also included with the car is a set of new beige carpet foot mats that I bought to protect the original carpet.
Everything under the bonnet is also very clean, sound and well maintained. Mechanically, the car starts first time, runs well and handles beautifully. It's a car that has clearly led a charmed life.
The bodywork is remarkably sound. I've included a lot of close-up photos to show just how good the bodywork is. The factory seams are crisp, the rain gutters are clear and there is no corrosion around the windscreens. In the engine bay, the bulkhead, inner wings and suspension mounting points are all rust free. The door bottoms and sill seams are rust free, and I've included photos to show how sound the wheel arches are and how solid the underside of the car is. I can't find any evidence of welding underneath the car or any need for it now. The car has clearly had a little paint in one or two places to cosmetically tidy up areas like the front spoiler, but you'll be able to see from the photos that the bodywork is exceptional for an original Capri.
I bought this car as mid-life-crisis birthday present for myself. The first car that I ever bought, about 35 years ago, was a 1. 6 Capri and I owned that car for about three years. It was the car I always looked back on most fondly. Ever since they started racing Capris again at the Goodwood Members Meeting, I'd been thinking about how much I'd like to experience owning one again. I finally took the plunge when I saw this one come up for sale, simply because the condition of it is so good. It's been an absolute joy to be back in a Capri, and this one in particular gets a lot attention everywhere it goes because of it being in such remarkable condition.
I've now had my nostalgia fix with the Capri, so I'd like to find a new home for it so I can try something else. I think you'll be as happy as I was to tuck this one into your garage.
