Description
BMW r60/ 5 1971 short wheelbase
A very good example of the smooth r60/ 5 that is 'well sorted' and can be used and enjoyed.
I bought this back in 2016, it was imported from France. At that time it was in white paint. unfortunately the paint was in poor condition, so when a tank and mudguards set came up in Germany I bought them. This set is in black, and has been hand lined by a retired BMW worker from the old production lines of the 1970s 80s.
I don't think that I have put more than 5k miles on the bike since I bought it. When I started to ride it a bit, I thought back to the early 1980s when I had owned a similar bike for several years, all be it a 1973 long wheel base version. This one didn't seem to ride as well, or, maybe the passage of time had something to do with that feeling. Anyway, I set about making it better.
First, I replaced the notchy head bearings, then the wheel bearings, carb jets and slides, recut the valve seats, ground in the valves, rocker posts, new piston rings, honed bores, new coils, new HT leads and caps, swing arm bearings, rebuilt front forks, electronic ignition, rebuilt an old 5 speed box and fitted that, fitted higher bars, found an original high bar screen, sourced a new front head light shell to get repainted. I'm sure you get the idea. The bike now runs very sweetly.
Comes with an excellent working 4 speed gear box, BMW screen, BMW engine bars, excellent headlamp shell, documents including instructions.
