Description
The colour scheme of this Toyota MR2 SW20 model is known as Sonic Shadow and consists of Lucerne Silver bodywork (as in the 10th Anniversary model) coupled with Satin Black Metallic for the top. This is the stereotypical one previous lady owner car, and we have tried hard to respect that and maintain its originality.
The car was delivered from Monty’s of Sheffield, who happened to be a sponsor of her nephew’s Formula 3 team, in August 1997. The comprehensive history shows regular and consistent use until 2017 when declining health meant it was laid up in her garage unused. Clearly there was an emotional attachment and the car was not sold until she had passed.
We bought the car in June 2024 and undertook a thorough recommissioning, both mechanically and for the bodywork. Despite its seven year “rest”, the work was relatively straightforward and we freely acknowledge the help of the MR2 Drivers Club was invaluable.
The car is totally original and includes a black leather interior, the Toyota radio cassette and CD player, leather steering wheel, glass T-Bar removable roof panels (with bags and blinds), remote central locking, electric windows and door mirrors, and standard 15" alloy wheels. The car presents really nicely, with the colour combination being a firm favourite among MR2 enthusiasts.
Somehow, despite its 28 years, it looks modern, sharp and fresh and highlights the SW20’s design beautifully. It has to be said, the SW20 has aged well and its lines arguably look better now than when new. Although introduced in 1989, each revision saw improvements and, in our view, the post-93 models are the better drivers.
It should be noted that these cars are comfortable in modern traffic, in a way some contemporary cars of that time aren’t. The mileage is nearly 85, 100 miles and confirmed by the comprehensive history file. We have a box file containing the two service books for previous servicing, repairs and testing, and paperwork that provides a fascinating insight into the life of this absolutely charming car.
So why is it up for sale? Well, this is our fifth MR2 MkII (SW20) and it has been an absolute joy to help bring back to life. However, our circumstances at home have changed and we have lost all of our garaging as an extensive rebuild is under way, hence we are thinning the number of cars we have.
We have advertised three cars for sale: a 10th Anniversary MR2 MkII with a story book history, an impossible not to love BMW E46 330Ci convertible, and this striking car with its wonderful road presence. All share the common themes of no more than two previous owners, low mileages, and interesting back stories.
We will be looking to sell two of the three and keep the third. All of these cars really do need to go to a knowledgeable enthusiast, someone who will appreciate what they represent and aim to treat them well.
Thank you for your attention and feel free to contact me for any further information.
Incidentally, the car will be sold with a year’s MOT and the number plate is included.
