Description

This is my P38, reluctantly for sale as I don’t really have space for it and don’t use it enough.
The car has clearly been well kept by previous owners and not used off road etc, consequently it is still a smart looking and reliable thing which is nice to drive.
It has MoT til December 2025 and is still being used from time to time although spending most of it’s time in dry classic car storage in Banbury. These are great cars but need buying carefully so I’ll tell you as much as I can about it.

Body condition:
Apart from a few small dinks and scratches commensurate with age, the bodywork and chassis are totally damage and rust free. The metallic blue paintwork is still very attractive and pretty shiny with no lacquer peel apart from the top of one mirror, the bumpers/ grilles etc are all straight and undamaged, glass is free of chips and cracks although it has a mild tint film that is a little wrinkly in places. Wheels/ tyres are in good condition all around. As you can see from the pics, this is still a striking looking and smart car that looks a lot more valuable than it is.

Interior condition:
The cream leather with contrasting blue piping has only minor wear commensurate with age and the cream carpets are intact with just age related marking. There are genuine RR rubber floor mats all around apart from the drivers footwell which has a genuine RR carpet one in, nicer underfoot.
The wood veneers are all pretty good, some marking to the centre console black plastics as is typical but no major damage anywhere and all is complete down to the rear parcel shelf.
The headliner has typical old Rangey “sagging” but is adequately held up out of the way and not offensive.
So it’s pretty nice inside, if you wanted to go to town on it I think it would clean up even better and could be stunning.

Mechanical condition:
Lovely sounding smooth straight six BMW diesel has 114k on the clock and runs perfectly, no overheating or leaking, knocking or smoking, it’s clearly been looked after throughout it’s life and has had a recent new alternator and battery.
Gearbox and transfer case work all correctly and quietly, Sport mode and Hi/ Lo ratio all function properly with no issues.
Air suspension works absolutely perfectly and the car stays “up” for weeks on end. It’s clearly had new airbags not that long ago, the compressor is quiet and it “kneels” on parking and drops on the motorway all correctly to give a superb ride.
Brakes are spot on with no warped discs etc, rear calipers/ discs/ pads are recent.
Axles are quiet and free of leaks, no ball joint play, CV boots all fine etc
Exhaust has been recently replaced and is perfect, tyres also have masses of tread and the attractive double spoke wheels are in good order. Locking wheelnut and tools are present.
Fitted towbar doesn’t seem to have been much used, but electrics all working so it’s ready to tow if wanted.

Electrics:
For the most part working OK, no warning lights on the dash and the info centre only complains about low washer fluid (it isn’t) and windows not set (it doesn’t matter, they work).
Lights, wipers etc etc all fully operational
Electric memory drivers seat all fully operational and very nice.
Instruments, trip computer, cruise control, steering wheel controls all perfect apart from a dead rev counter which doesn’t bother me.
Harmon Kardon speakers with original stereo fitted and working, with code. Haven’t tested the CD changer in the boot, suspect that may not be a go-er.
All 4 windows go up and down, tho the driver side winder mechanism does clunk at the top and needs pushing up the last 5mm to stop it whistling on the motorway.
HVAC system does work, temp goes up and down, air direction buttons all work, demist mode works, LH fan speed adjustable but RH fan stuck on one speed (so it does clear the windscreen!) and the LCD screen is blank, a known P38 issue and quite cheaply fixed if you want, but actually it’s not a problem to get the temperature how you want it inside. Also the AC does not blow cold.
Central locking works on the key (only one full key but also a spare “blade” that opens the doors), it does have typical P38 occasional “jumping” locks which is again a fairly cheap fix but not one that’s worried me and when locked on the key it stays locked and secure. I do have the EKA code too, (if you know what this is you’ll know it’s valuable to have).

So there you have it, not a show pony but definitely not a shed, ready to use as-is with no spending or work required but would be a very good and easy car to improve aesthetically if you wanted, it has a nice short reg number and is the prettier facelift model, plus of course it’s the less thirsty diesel and , being older, the tax isn’t exorbitant plus it can be insured as a classic very cheaply.
Don’t really want to sell but at least I can tick Range Rover off the bucket list.
