Description

This pre-merger 1994 Mercedes-Benz S60 AMG is finished in Black Pearl Metallic (199) over a Black Leather (261) interior and shows an original 74, 429 kilometres (47, 000 miles) on the odometer. It was delivered new in Japan in June of 1994, starting life as an S500 but undergoing a full conversion to an S60 AMG - a procedure which was only offered by AMG-Japan thus making this car exceedingly rare. The significant modification included a 6. 0-litre M119 V8 engine (AMG engine stamps shown), an AMG body kit, BBS AMG Aero II wheels, AMG badging both inside and outside, AMG 300 km/ h speedometer and AMG floor mats. Making this car rarer still is that it’s a SWB, and has the luxurious individual rear power seat package with orthopedic support and OEM stereo remote control.

This low-mileage super saloon was imported by us in November of 2013, and just under 13k kilometres have been added during our ownership. It is offered from our collection near Brighton, UK - with factory literature, a JDM Super Cat radar detector, previous import documentation, and a clean U. K. title and registration. A recent mechanical refresh by John Haynes Mercedes-Benz specialists in Goring-by-Sea included replacement wiring harnesses, coolant flush, spark plugs, air/ fuel/ cabin filters and much more (invoice available upon request).

The Black Pearl Metallic (199) exterior is paired with paint matched lower cladding that includes pre-facelift AMG bumpers and side skirts. Original AMG badging can be seen on the front bumper lip and the car has been debadged in the rear – its S500 moniker stripped from the boot lid and replaced with an AMG badge. Paint is believed to be original, as are the AMG Japan stickers on the window glass. Japanese curved blindspot side view mirrors are installed and the front driver mirror cap shows two light scuffs. The paintwork and clear coat are in great condition as shown. Notable features include a power sunroof, double-glazed glass and headlamp washers. HWA AMG muffler and related plate is seen on the muffler body and AMG can be seen on the muffler tips. Being a 1994 W140 model, it also features the marvellously over-engineered powered reverse marker poles.

18” 2-piece BBS AMG Aero II wheels adorn all four corners in a square setup of 255/ 45 sized Michelin Primacy HP with 2015 date codes. Some of the wheels show very light curb rash and clear coat damage in places. Mercedes-Benz branded astral silver centre caps are fitted to all four wheels.

The original Black leather (261) trimmed cabin features burled walnut trim on the doors, centre console and dash panel. Notable interior options on this W140 include power adjustable and heated front seats, dual zone climate control, and rear passenger vanity mirrors. A Becker 1692 head unit remains untouched with a rear multi disc trunk mounted CD changer. A burl walnut shift knob replaces the original leather wrapped variant. The front seats are fitted with orthopedic lumbar support as are the rear seats. This 6. 0 AMG was checked with the rare individual rear seat option which includes a wooden storage partition and a control console for the rear optioned roller blind and orthopedic lumbar support for the rear occupants. The rear seats are powered and recline with OEM controls. The Mercedes-Benz remote for the original Becker is shown in the gallery and included. Rare original AMG floor mats are included in the sale as well as a safety triangle mounted in the boot lid. An original first aid kit remains with the car.

A four-spoke black leather steering wheel frames the AMG specific 300 km/ h speedometer, a 7k RPM tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel economy, and fuel level along with an analog clock. External temperature display reads in celsius between the warning lights of which all the bulbs operate as shown in the gallery.

This period flagship saloon is powered by an AMG modified 6. 0-litre M119 V8 rated at 375 horsepower and 428 ft-lb of torque mated to a 4G-Tronic 722. 3 transmission. Photos of the AMG stamped engine are included. 6. 0-litre engines received modified pistons from AMG, utilised a stroker M117 crankshaft from a 5. 5 litre engine, and had a 100mm bore and stroke along with modified pistons and camshafts. A LH module was used for modified fuel mapping. Photos of the underbody are viewable in the gallery as is some superficial corrosion on hardware and springs.

AMG Japan stamps, stickers, and plates are seen throughout the car, in the engine bay, on the engine, HWA plates are included on the AMG muffler, and the 6. 0 litre verification plate can be found on the radiator support and in the door sill.--
A short wheelbase S500 turned 6. 0 AMG Yakuza spec hot-rod has to be one of the coolest sights in mid-90s Japan. This thug of a car would have looked like a shark stalking the dark streets of Japan with laser bright neons reflected off the sculpted AMG bodywork. How good is this spec? Who owned this car new? What’s their story? The M119 is great in 4. 2 and 5. 0-litre form, but it becomes an entirely different beast at 6. 0-litres. The torque down low is uncanny. Throttle response is immediate. The engine note is heavy and meaty, this one especially with the AMG exhaust.

Some are familiar with this car’s siblings, the SL60 AMG and E60 AMG, but very few are aware of the S-Class equivalent.
