Description

For sale is my 1976 Land Rover Series 3 which was rebuilt in 2024 and enjoyed.

It is a SWB 88” which was first registered in June 1976. It has the 2. 25 litre petrol engine which is running well with the 4 speed gearbox. Being over 40 years old it is tax and MOT exempt however, for peace of mind, it has just passed an MOT in February with no advisories. The rebuild last year left no bolt unturned and everything has been meticulously rebuilt from the chassis up, which is a galvanised chassis. I’ve owned this since early 2023 and the odometer shows just over 11, 500 miles. As with all old Land Rover this milage cannot be guaranteed and I have not historical paperwork or MOTs to verify this milage. It has however been inspected and everything rebuilt so the mileage is not a true a representation of the vehicle. The milage may go up slightly as I remind myself what I’m going to miss out on when its gone!

As said, the rebuild did cover about everything so I will list the main points below. I am likely to miss something so please do ask if you have a question that can’t be answered from the description.

Chassis and Bulkhead
The chassis is a galvanised chassis. It has been painted with Buzzweld GIO paint systems designed for galvanised steel. It was painted in black to look as original and because the galvanised zinc coating does dull down over time and doesn’t look great.
The bulkhead has been repaired to high standard with all rot removed and replace with fresh steel. The footwells have been replaced and the bulkhead top has been repaired. The bulkhead was shot blasted before being primed with Buzzweld rust encapsulator followed by 2k primer and 2k topcoat in pastel green.

Engine and Gearbox
The engine is the 2. 25 petrol engine which has been checked over and many new parts fitted. The engine was dissembled to check for wear and any damage. The engine was in good health but big end shells were renewed and new head gasket installed. New parts include fuel pump, electronic distributor and HT leads, water pump and carburettor. It has also had a full service with new spark plugs, new filters, and fresh oil. The coolant system has been refreshed with new hoses and a new brass radiator. Likewise, the fuel system has been renewed with hoses and a new fuel tank
The gearbox works well with no nasty noises or surprises. It runs well in all gears and 4wd and high and low range as they should. The clutch has been replaced including all hydraulic lines/ pipes and the master and slave cylinders

Axles and Suspension
The axles hubs have been stripped and items replaced where needed. All wheel bearings are new and the front swivel kingpins have been replaced. The prop shafts are new both front and rear and differentials do not have excessive play.
The Land Rover has new springs all round and new dampers and hardware

Brakes and Steering
The full brake system has been renewed including the master cylinder, all brake pipes and hoses, all wheel cylinders, all shoes and brake drums. The brakes do work well for a fully drum braked vehicle
The steering box and relay have been rebuilt with new seals and fresh oil. All new track rods and track rod ends meaning that the steering is light and precise despite the lack of power steering. It really is a pleasure to drive

Body and Lighting
The body is finished in pastel green which has been painted in 2k paint over 2k primer and 2k etch primer. All panels have been stripped back to bare metal before painting. Doors are new items and wings were very straight. The rear tub has had a new floor fitted with galvanised cross supports
All galvanised trim has been shot blasted and re-galvanised. This includes all the body cappings, the windscreen frame, bonnet hinges and even the front panel was galvanised
It is fitted with an Exmoor trim full sand hood which was new at the end of last year. This can be removed with the hood stick to go topless for the summer
The wheels are wolf wheels in limestone with Goodyear MT/ R tyres. All wheels, including the spare, have plenty of tread
The Land Rover has a new full main wiring harness and new lighting throughout so all electrics work well

Interior
The interior is mainly as per a standard series 3 but with the additional of tan deluxe front and rear bench seats from Exmoor trim. The other additions include the wood rimmed Mountney steering wheel and dash re-trimmed in leather. Other than those items the interior is simple with just rubber mats in the footwells and in the rear load space. A seatbelt bar has been fitted to allow fitment of inertia reel 3-point seat belts
