1958 MG Magnette

The car is a very original 1958 MG ZB which has had 4 owners from new. The car was bought new in Darlington in 1958 by a Mr W Farrar who owned it for 55 years until 2013 when he unfortunately passed away. The car then passed in his will to a relation who kept if for 3 years until it was purchased by Sam Findlay who kept it for a further 3 years until I purchased it in June 2019.
The car still retains most of the original paint and the interior is also original. It has never been restored, repaired or welded and is still rust free. It has the patina of a well used car that is 63 years old with the paintwork rubbed through in places through excessive polishing. The chrome is all original but the mazak trim has bubbled a bit over the years.
I have rebuilt the car mechanically with the following work being carried out to make the car reliable and able to keep up with modern traffic:-
All suspension bushes replaced.
New front shock absorbers.
Rear springs rebuilt with new interleaf rubbers.
New rear brake cylinders
Rebuilt brake master cylinder
New brake linings all round.
Brake servo installed.
Rear axle rebuilt with uprated differential (now 3. 9:1 instead of 4. 55:1)
Engine rebuilt by Skiptune, fully dynamically balanced, unleaded head, Piper fast road cam, new water pump and clutch.
Maniflo 3 branch manifold with large bore exhaust system.
Gearbox rebuilt with new 2nd gear synchromesh.
Electronic ignition with rebuilt distributor from The Distributor Doctor.
Carburettors rebuilt and the engine set up on a rolling road to achieve maximum performance.
New electric fuel pump and pipes.
Re-wired throughout with a new loom from Autosparks.
New battery.
LED bulbs fitted to all lights.
Inertia seat belts fitted at the front for safety.
During the set-up on the rolling road, it was found that the original air filter caused the mixture to be incorrect at the higher end of the rev range. This air filter has been removed and a modern one fitted in the interest of maintaining the performance but the original is available and comes with the car as do all the parts required to return the car to the original specification if required.
I am convinced that odometer reading is correct as I have an MOT Certificate dated 12 March 2002 giving the odometer reading as 80146. I addition, when Skiptune stripped the engine for the rebuild they found that it had the original pistons and crankshaft bearings, so that it had never been previously rebuilt. The MG ZB Magnette was one of the best sports saloons of the 1950's. It is relatively fast and with the mechanical upgrades that I have carried out , will cruise happily at 75 mph plus, thus capable of keeping up with modern traffic. It is spacious inside and drives and handles very well, thanks to coil and wishbone front suspension and the rack and pinion steering.
Since I have owned it, we have been on a tour of Scotland covering over 1200 miles in a week. We have also visited the Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset, the Shuttleworth Trust, the Beamish Museum in County Durham, the MG Magnette 70th anniversary weekend in Abbingdon and many other car shows and events. It has always performed well and has never me down. However, I have now reached age when driving in traffic is no longer enjoyable and it is time for Maggie to have a new home, hopefully with someone who will retain the originality but also use her as intended.
