Description
The car is solid and original. It has one previous owner who bought it from new in South Africa. He bought new cars every two or three years and never sold any. All were kept under cover.
I imported the car to the UK in 2001 and have the full paperwork. I have fitted an additional rear light and new tyres but everything else is as I bought it. The original seats appear to have been re-upholstered, presumably due to uv degradation of the original fabric in the S. A. sun, but all the door cards and head lining are original.
The car spent one winter in a private multi-storey car park so the damp UK air caused the porous 1928 paintwork to begin to flake off and the plated surfaces have similarly suffered but these are superficial effects and the underlying metal is solid.
I ran the car regularly until about two years ago and it has been in storage since. This is one of the first Model A's and was registered in April 1928. It was built in the Windsor, Ontario plant for export to South Africa which is why it is right hand drive but has the larger more powerful engine which is a rare combination in the UK.
These cars are thoroughly practical classics and sufficient numbers have survived that all parts are easy to obtain. It is so simple to work on as you can see what every part does and how to fix it if required. After all, it was meant for use in remote parts of the USA where folk were self-sufficient and the main dealer may have been hundreds of miles away.
The Model A Ford Club of Great Britain is a thriving and very friendly community which provides great support for owners too.
