The period correct engine underwent a full nut & bolt rebuild and is fitted with Prill’s 1720 pistons & cylinders (the best), new valves & guides, camshaft (Prill fast road) and numerous other internal parts. All the parts were removed, blasted and powder coated (as an example a sample of the fan housing original paint colour was found under a bracket and matched). Further the Zenith carbs have been rebuilt and the generator refurbished (noticeably producing more voltage).
Because this 356 was a European spec car it was supplied with the higher performance heater boxes however the heating boxes & system have been removed and a KK Sebring exhaust added thus removing significant weight, improved performance, sound and noting the owner only uses the car in the summer. The car comes with the rear boxes, exhaust & parts to connect at a later date. The gearbox came out for what appears to be for the first time and was refreshed with a new clutch & flywheel and mounts. The suspension has been fully rebuilt with new bushes, bearings, etc and it now drives & handles superbly for a 1964 car.
Internally the seats have been reupholstered, with new internals including powder coating the frames, hessian, rubber springs, etc and enhanced with Pepita inserts which were introduced in December 1963 for the first time (there true purpose to provide grip so you don’t slide about). The touch points have been furnished with a wooden steering wheel & gear knob but the car comes with the originals. Where we have changed the persona eg the ‘outlaw’ look we have also retaining all the original equipment and have re-instated and it is currently mostly original.
Then moving to some of the little things, for example adding a priming fuel pump and the radio serviced. It is regularly maintained, oil changes being a priority. On the outside the paintwork would benefit a refresh.
Selling without the cherished number plate. As a late 356C this car was manufactured in June 1964 and first delivered in Germany. The later 356 benefits from all round disc brakes on the T6 chassis. The car is a mixture of original patina on the top but underneath it has been refurbished to make this an everyday useable car (in the summer when there is no evidence of salt on the roads). As the current owner we have had the car for 12+ years and use. Prior to this it was exhibited in the Aalholm Museum.
This car drives well (notably since the engine and suspension rebuild), pulling & holding its own with character & surprisingly well. The refurbished seats provide the accompanying comfort. The car is kept in a heated & dehumidified garage for dry summer use.
Although we thought it was a keeper we are offering for sale. I use the car as a daily in the summer (subject to weather), as an example we used it every other day during Covid to collect the bread & provisions.
An enjoyable daily useable classic.
