KEY FACTS
● This Land Rover Series II 109 is an icon from the village garages of the 1960’s & 1970’s and a rare original example of the classic British 4x4, which has been preserved with care and attention using period correct parts where required.
● Under the bonnet sits the original ‘151’ 2. 25 (2286cc) 4 cylinder petrol engine with the original Solex carburettor, driving all four wheels via a four-speed manual transmission and high/ low range transfer box.
● Built on the 4th September 1959 and despatched to the LR Main Dealer in Norfolk on the 22nd September 1959, this example has been with the seller and only third owner for over seven years.
● The odometer shows 60, 516 miles from new.
● Factory fitted Smiths heater and servo assisted brakes.
● Instead of the more commonly seen Harvey Frost crane, this vehicle was fitted from new with the ‘rare’ locally supplied (Norfolk) Mann Egerton LR approved recovery equipment. This includes a two-ton crane with tubular frame mounted in the load bed. This was an early example as it has a hand operated winch mounted against the cab bulkhead.
● This Series II was owned from new by Wymondham Motor Company until the garage closed in 2014. Ownership then passed to a well-known Norfolk Land Rover Enthusiast until the current owner purchased it in 2017.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
● Introduced in 1958, the Series II was only produced until 1961. This model is an early 109 inch long wheel base ‘basic’ pick up variant, with storage compartments in the load bay behind the rear wheel arches.
● This example has been fitted with new colour coordinated seats. The original ‘elephant hide’ seats will be included in the sale, if the new owner wishes to restore them.
● An illuminated ‘Towing’ sign is affixed to the front bumper, a period amber rotating beacon on the roof and an additional red light on the front wing for when recovering vehicles facing on-coming traffic at night.
● The wheels have been refurbished and fitted with new Avon Rangemaster tyres.
CONDITION
● Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
● The vehicle is generally in an excellent original condition, celebrating it’s patina, small dents and scratches from it’s former working life.
● The seller is not aware of any mechanical faults, and has been serviced and maintained using original / genuine parts throughout their ownership.
SERVICE HISTORY (During current ownership)
● This Series II’s most recent maintenance was carried out in July 2023 at 60505 miles by G. A. Henman & Sons Limited, which consisted of an annual service, and the water pump being replaced with a genuine refurbished original part.
● Prior to this, an extended service was performed in November 2022 by Brownings Restoration Ltd, which included a full service, differentials, gearbox and transfer box oils being changed, all four wheel bearings replaced and front swivel housings replaced.
● An annual service was carried out in 2018 by Brownings Restoration Ltd, as well as the refurbishment of all five wheels and new Avon Rangemaster tyres fitted.
● An annual service and maintenance was carried out in April 2018 at 59470 by LR specialist M. J. Rolls.
Due to mobility issues, the current owner and their family does not get the opportunity to use the vehicle regularly and attend classic car shows as they once did, therefore it is time for a new owner to be found who will gain the enjoyment of driving this classic and cherish it as they have. This Land Rover Series II is a timeless and original example of an iconic British breakdown truck, which has been cared for and preserved by its current owner. During those seven years, the vehicle has been driven to and displayed at multiple car shows across the country, including: Gaydon, Carfest, LRO Show Peterborough, Kelmarsh, Duxford, Shuttleworth and Billing. It would make a great addition to any classic collection, and a trusty companion for leisurely driving, and weekend adventures.
