Description
The Mercedes-Benz 220S Coupé was one of the elegant highlights of the late 1950s and early 1960s, a time when automotive design combined luxury with technical precision. This two-door car, part of the famous W180 series, continued the post-war tradition of the "Ponton" – cars with smooth lines and a focus on comfort. Under the hood, it housed a 2. 2-liter inline six-cylinder engine, which, with its reliability and smooth operation, not only provided decent performance but also ensured a pleasant driving experience. An interesting fact is that Mercedes still used a robust construction with a ladder frame at the time, contributing to excellent durability. The coupé versions were always exclusive – the hand-assembled interiors with wood and leather gave the car a noble atmosphere that still fascinates collectors today.
This particular example, built in 1960, is the American version that underwent restoration both in the USA and later in Sweden, from where it was brought to the Czech Republic in 2019. The 2, 195 cm³ engine still retains its characteristic smoothness, and regular maintenance in the Czech Republic ensures its reliability. Annual servicing is standard, with the most recent being in spring 2024, when a thorough brake system overhaul was done, carburetors were adjusted, and all important oils – engine, transmission, and differential – were replaced. Additionally, the brake fluid was changed to ensure the car remains not only an elegant classic but also a safe and fully functional machine on the road.
