Description
Original Italian car fully restored in 2018, currently registered in Belgium (oldtimer). Very good condition, very sound bodywork, known history, extensive service history, likely original mileage according to documentation (but impossible to guarantee). The Alfa Romeo Spider "Duetto" is one of the Milanese marque's most iconic cars. The Spider remained in production for 27 years, but only the models from 1966 to 1969, known as "osso di seppia", had the "long tail" that gave it a unique elegance.
At the beginning of the 60s, during the 'Dolce vita' period, Alfa Romeo, riding on the wave of the commercial success of the Giulia GT, also known as the 'Bertone', decided to radically innovate its open car (Giulietta spider and then Giulia spider), which had a body that was certainly attractive but with a 'chubby' style that was no longer in line with the modernity of the fabulous 60s. After a first unsuccessful attempt with Bertone bodywork (Giulia GTC), Alfa Romeo entrusted the task to Pininfarina, and this was one of the last works personally supervised by the founder Giovanni Battista Pininfarina (1893-1966). The car was powerful, thanks to Alfa Romeo's know-how and in particular to its famous "bialbero" engine and four disc brakes, as well as being extremely modern, a clear advance on what was available on the market. It was presented to great acclaim in 1966 during a luxurious transatlantic cruise, with many VIPs invited on board; shortly after disembarking in New York the car was used by Dustin Hofmann in the film "The Laureate" (1967, also starring Anne Bancroft) and the Spider thus became the object of desire of countless car enthusiasts around the world. This is a relatively rare model in Belgium, not to be confused with the successive series 2, 3 and 4 (1970-1993, also inaccurately called Duetto). My 1966 1600 cc example was restored between 2015 and 2018 and is maintained in very good condition, but unfortunately I don't have the time to enjoy it.
