Description
1985 UR Audi Quattro
I acquired the car on 4/ 7/ 1995. It has had 4 registration plates; C670OPN, ABC49, C702VPM and since 12/ 11/ 2018; ZG1985UR.
I’m the fifth owner. I bought it when I was commuting across Europe a lot and having previously owned a Coupe I knew it would handle the task. It didn't disappoint and even after settling in Croatia I couldn't let it go even though its right-hand drive. However, for the last ten years it has been driven less than 1300 miles a year. The other 350 days a year it spends under covers in the garage. It doesn’t come out in the rain or if there is salt on the roads and its black without air conditioning so it is rarely driven here in the summer. It was always maintained and sometimes stored (winter) at the same VAG service Matoković in Zagreb, Croatia. It was a working car when I bought it 30 years ago but since then its had a pampered existence. Audi Quattros were exclusively hand-built at the now famous Hall N2 at Ingolstadt in 1985. At that time Audi was producing 1700 cars a day from this site, only three were UR Quattros. This one then, has pretty much been hand-built again since. I have always used original parts or reconditioned its parts instead of using more easily available custom replacements with two notable exceptions. First was the Scorpion stainless steel exhaust and then a Dialynx cast iron exhaust manifold. Some of the pictures are of the last two major overhauls in 2017 and 2021. I managed to find a new original camshaft in Germany which made my mechanic very happy and set the standard for what in the end turned out to be a pretty complete engine overhaul. I have driven 2000 miles since so I'm still running it in. Its all there and feels as it did before, the car always wants more. I have a M2 and an electric mini cooper both are faster and fun in their way but there is no comparison to driving the Quattro. You need at least 20 kilometers for everything to get warm and be nice and responsive especially if it hasn't been driven in a while. Once warm though, the grunt, the vibration, the sound, the smell, it's a different driving experience.
Previously, the bodywork had been scoured of rust and treated with Valvoline primers and sealants and Tectyl undercoating before liters of Dupont paint were applied by the locally renowned Javor i Sin body shop. To be fair the car was always garage kept and never covered wet so mainly I didn’t have a visible rust problem but once they stripped it down they treated everything and now the paintwork is pristine everywhere.
You can see the receipts for major parts over the years in the photo gallery here along with details of; the car’s service history, original receipt, ownership history, overhauls and MOTs. Also, there are few YouTube videos at russellowens8659. The car has never been in better condition since I have owned it but it needs to be driven more regularly than I have managed for years.
Please be advised I can take it to any inspection you choose to organise in Zagreb. We are a two hour flight from the UK and Ireland with Zagreb being one of Ryanair's hubs so we are not too difficult to get to. Also, although I'm sure most UK interested parties will already know, there is zero import duty on this age of vehicle and a reduced rate of 5% VAT. Delivery can be arranged at cost.
