Description

This is your opportunity to ‘BUY 1’, an inspiration to the most famous 1950s Jaguar.

In 1959 Jaguar supplied a Pearl Grey 3. 4 (Mk 1) saloon to Mr John Coombs of Coombs Garages in Guildford. The Coombs Pearl Grey car with the registration “BUY 1”, was one of three 3. 4 (Mk 1) Jaguar “S-spec” saloons destined for the 1959 saloon car championship and driven by the likes of Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Tommy Sopwith, and Roy Salvadori.

This sale is for a superb and similar example, a 1958 Pearl Grey Jaguar 3. 4 (Mk 1) with factory fitted Dunlop disc brakes and overdrive.

I have owned the car since June 2020, the previous owner a well-known toolroom Jaguar D-type and C-type builder, who discovered this beautiful original Mk 1 in New Zealand. When I purchased it, the previous owner had repatriated the car and re-commissioned it although the front seats had been superbly recovered to the correct red leather finish. The rest of the interior is all original which feels and smells like you are sitting in a gentleman’s club.

This stunning original car takes some inspiration from the Coombs Pearl Grey car and sports brand new competition specification wire wheels as Jaguar would have fitted in period to the 3. 4 (Mk 1) Jaguar “S-spec” saloons . The wider competition rear wheels provide a wider track on the original axle, hence the Coombs style spats to allow for clearance. The standard spec wire wheels and the original spats, in perfect condition, are also come with the sale.

The car has also been upgraded with a Mk 2 front subframe and coupled with the wider wheels she handles beautifully and feels very planted on the road with no undue noises. The cooling system has been completely reconditioned with new radiator core, new hoses all round, refurbished cooling pipes and new electric fan using a switch on the dash.

Ken Jenkins (the well-known Jaguar expert) has looked after the car through my ownership and recently completed a multi-part Jaguar World magazine feature on the engine rebuild. All the Jaguar World articles are in the history file along with the exclusive detailed pictures of that recent engine rebuild.

Ken Jenkins has fitted 123 ignition distributor which is superb and with the car being negative earth we have fitted a Powerlite Dynalite (an alternator that looks and fits like the original dynamo). The propshaft looks new after being balanced and reconditioned and front and rear windscreen rubbers have been renewed and fit perfectly.

The carburetors, inlet manifold and air intake horn have been beautifully refurbished by David Longsdale and look and perform like new. She is running with SU carburetor intake stacks but the original air silencer and oil bath filtration system all come with the sale.

She has passed her MOT with no advisories and I have just installed a brand-new Lucas battery. A very large history file accompanies the car documenting every little detail which includes all receipts for previous works in the UK and history from New Zealand which confirms its current mileage of 130, 000.
She now stands to be the best original Mk 1 Jaguar on the market, never having been restored and a real joy to own and drive, representing the best of Jaguar's important history.
