(Additional Documents, Photos and Videos available on request)On the History side: It’s been in our Family here in the Western Cape Province of South Africa since 1952/ 53. I do believe that the Austin was imported directly from the UK and assembled right here in South Africa (Uitenhage). As I understood from my father, my grandfather’s “brother-in-law” (my grandmother’s sister’s husband), the then owner of a Wine Farm just outside Stellenbosch, imported it new to South Africa from England in 1952. But soon thereafter he realized that the springs/ shock absorbers and ride in the vineyards was too hard for him with the Austin, and my grandfather took it over from him in 1953 and it was his farm bakkie on our family farm just outside Bredasdorp in the Overberg district. When my grandfather first brought it home, my dad, only 10 years old, of course took it for a drive first opportunity he got …
The Austin was later on stored in one of the barns on the farm, but my dad and myself (only 13 years old at the time) went to fetch it in 1988 (original number plates under my grandfather and father was CS 1988 …) and my dad refurbished the Austin (spray-painted, worked on the engine, carburetor, fuel pump, brakes, etc.) 36 years after production, in the workshop at the company he was working for in Bellville-South (a Northern Industrial Area of Cape Town) and then took it to our home in Goodwood (a Northern suburb of Cape Town) where he used it as per normal (driving to work, taking the dogs to the beach, etc). I of course also further learned to drive in Austin, even the traffic cops never used to pull me over prior to me getting my driver’s license, they always only admired and asked about the Austin. From around 2010 my parents moved to my house here in Langebaan, with the Austin the only of my father’s vintage cars to travel with. But with my father having passed a couple of years ago, it is becoming more and more difficult for us to keep up with the requirements needed to keep Austin in his current good condition. Austin is on the road, licensed and registered (has S License, thus no Roadworthy required in South Africa), and in good running order. But, with another 36 years on since the first refurbishment in Bellville, I trust another refurbishment would be of value.
