Description

A very tidy Mazda MX-5 10th Anniversary. Spec highlights include:

15-inch chrome alloy wheels
Bilstein shock absorbers
Torsen limited slip differential
Heated rear screen
NARDI steering wheel
Electric windows
Driver and passenger airbag
Black leather seats with blue suede inserts

Power comes from a 1. 8-litre petrol engine with 140hp, while it was the first MX-5 to be sold with a six-speed manual gearbox. Mazda really chucked everything at its special editions back then - and only 600 were sold in the UK. There's now a strong contingency of MX-5 10th Anniversary models owned by MX-5 Owners Club members, and there's even an online register dedicated to this model with an annual meet-up.

This particular MX-5 10th Anniversary has been owned by a succession of enthusiasts, with the previous owner keeping it for 18 years. It comes with an extensive amount of service history which you're welcome to read at your leisure. Highlights include more than £2, 000 worth of welding in July 2020, including inner rear sills, arches and floor as well as outer wheel arches and sill sections.

This appears to have been completed to a high standard, with no rust bubbles showing or signs of serious corrosion. It was certainly the least-rusty Mk2 MX-5 I could find when I bought it last summer - and I understand that earlier Mk2 MX-5s are less susceptible to rotten chassis rails than later facelift models.

I serviced it in June 2024 at 80, 105 miles (including spark plugs, oil and filter) - I haven't got a receipt for this, so you'll have to take my word for it. I was going to change the air filter but it was so clean I deemed it unnecessary.

It’s now covered around 82, 000 miles (I need to check the exact figure). It has an MoT until July 2025.

It's not perfect but it is a very useable classic car. Negatives include the typical crazing to the wheels - I planned to change these but there's plenty of tread on the tyres and the chrome alloys are growing on me. A refurb would help if you wish to keep it original.

You'll find a few marks on the bodywork if you look closely, the most obvious being some damage to the rear bumper where I was overzealous removing a sticker. A good polish would have it coming up a treat.

The original soft-top roof is in excellent condition, while the car also comes with a hardtop (a rare find, especially in this colour).

The car is currently SORNed and locked away in my garage in Newport, Shropshire (not South Wales). I plan to get it out next weekend (25th January) - I can take some fresh pictures then, including close-ups of the not-so-pretty bits. It'll be available to view from then, too.
