Description
Crossley Motors, based in Manchester, England, produced approximately 19, 000 high quality cars from 1904 until 1938, 5, 500 buses from 1926 until 1958 and 21, 000 goods and military vehicles from 1914 to 1945.
The cars were known for their exceptional engineering, which was on a par with the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
The engine is a 2388cc side valve. It has a cast iron cylinder block with removable cast iron cylinder head. It has an aluminium crankcase.
The car starts easily in cold or hot weather, and runs well. It will cruise happily at 50 mph, although I prefer to run it at 42 mph to give it an easy life. The 3 speed gearbox changes easily, requiring double-declutching only occasionally, although it must be borne in mind that the car is 98 years old and there is no synchromesh in the gearbox, so like all vintage cars careful gearchanging is advised.
There is a full set of hood, sidescreens, hud bag, doors and two-piece full tonneau cover. All are professionally made and in excellent condition.
This car spent most of its life in Australia. It was exported when new as a rolling chassis and engine, and was bodied in Australia, probably by Holdens. It was imported back to the UK about the year 2000, and was subjected to a high quality restoration. In particular, the paintwork is still excellent, having been done by an ex Rolls-Royce coachpainter.
I have owned the Crossley for 6 years, and have used it regularly to go to shows and longer trips. I have driven it to the last four Crossley Register National Rallies.
During my ownership the Crossley has had a new set of 5 tyres and a stainless steel full exhaust system. It has had the engine sump removed, cleaned out, oil filter removed and cleaned, and the sump refitted. The engine leaks very little if any oil. The engine oil used is Dynolite 25W70, and the gearbox and rear axle are filled with Redline oil.
The car is a pleasure to drive, and will give the purchaser many years of happy vintage motoring. It is ready for the 2025 season of shows and rallies.
