Description
I bought this rather charming Mercedes at auction, at the beginning of December.
I bought it because of it's good specification (working electric memory seat as an example) and the fact that it's the iconic S124 wagon, THE car from the 80s and 90s for moving people and luggage. Also, unlike most W124 at this price level, I couldn't see through the wings or the sills, which was a plus.
However, buying cars at auction is always a voyage of discovery and in the cold light of day, this car is not for me to keep.
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad at all for a 30 year old car and drives very well. Since I've replaced the battery, throttle body and OVP relay, it starts and runs reliably. Mechanically it appears strong, the automatic gearbox changes smoothly and kicks down as it should (car and classic seem to only allow manual gearbox, but it's definitely auto).
The all important SLS rear suspension is working correctly as is the soft close mechanism on the boot.
I've thrown away the 25 year old tyres that were on the car when I got it, as well as the incorrect W210 wheels. These have been replaced with the correct, W124 eight hole 15 inch wheels and new Bridgestone all season tyres all round, because no one really likes budget ditchfinders.
But, inevitably, it has some old car problems, as they all do.
These include the electric windows not currently working. The speedo works, as does the odometer, but the rest of the gauges come and go (at the moment, in the photos, they're on a gone phase). The windscreen has a crack in the lower left corner and will need to be replaced. The central locking works, apart from the rear passenger door and the boot. Old car problems, you get the idea and if you're looking at this ad, I know you won't be surprised and will hopefully appreciate the honest description.
And that's my reason for selling. Because I wanted this car as a daily driver (I have other cars that need more work), and it just needs a bit more TLC than I have time for.
There's a good history file with the car, including original service book with stamps, obviously been looked after and driving well for it's 184000 miles, with no knocks or bangs. Cosmetically good as well, albeit with a few marks, but no big dents or scratches. Above average for age I would say.
The interior is nice in grey leather. The drivers electric memory seat works as do the electric mirrors. In fact, as far as I can tell, it all works apart from the things I've already mentioned. The drivers seat has a small hole in the bolster, which I've pictured.
MOT until July, so drive away. If you need anything else, please just get in touch.
Thank you for looking at my listing.
So, as of this morning, I've replaced all of the fuses in the fuse box with new ones. All gauges on the instrument panel are now working once more.
