Here is an excellent example of an R50, which I have proudly owned for the past 43 years. I originally purchased it from a trusted friend in 1981 and was used for my motorbike driving exam which I passed first time.
This bike was imported from the Netherlands, with its first UK registration completed in December 2015. This R50 is a true testament to classic engineering, combining timeless design with outstanding reliability. Having owned it for 43 years, I can confidently say it’s a rare gem that has been both a joy to ride and a piece of living history. This R50 comes equipped with classic enduro panniers and a Denfeld pillion saddle, which can be conveniently removed from the luggage rack, adding versatility to its functionality.
To enhance reliability and performance, the bike underwent a significant upgrade five years ago with the installation of a 12-volt electronic ignition system and generator, bringing it up to modern standards. For purists, the original “light machine” and distributor are included, along with a basic repair manual. During the same upgrade, the cylinders were bored, and new pistons, valves, and valve guides were fitted, ensuring the engine remains in excellent condition.
In 1987, a minor parking lot incident caused cosmetic damage to the cooling fins of the left cylinder head when a car reversed into the bike. This has since been mitigated with the addition of a crash bar for extra protection. These updates and modifications add to the bike’s practicality while preserving its classic charm and originality.
