The Porsche 928 came onto the market in 1977 and was actually intended to replace the 911 as the new top-of-the-range model. For some customers, however, the new model was not purist enough, as the 928 was in a completely different league in terms of character. Designed as a genuine gran turismo car, it had a V8 front engine and rear-wheel drive with a gearbox mounted on the rear axle for a perfect weight distribution in terms of driving dynamics that was unusual in this vehicle class. With these virtues, the 928 quickly found its very own, upmarket and loyal group of buyers and thus remained in the Porsche sales programme, always slightly revised, until 1995.
