Description
A rare classic with great prestige, this stunning and highly original Alfa Romeo 2600 Berlina from 1966 is a true gem!
The Alfa Romeo 2600, also known as Tipo 106, was the flagship model of the renowned Italian brand between 1962 and 1968. It succeeded the 2000 and would go down in history as the last model to feature Alfa Romeo’s iconic inline six-cylinder engine. Since the 1920s, Alfa Romeo had used six-cylinder engines, but as demand grew for mass-produced cars, the need for four-cylinder engines increased, leading to the gradual disappearance of the six-cylinder configuration.
The Alfa Romeo 2600 series was introduced to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in 1962. In addition to the Berlina shown here, with its in-house designed bodywork, the lineup included a convertible with a Touring-designed body, the 2600 Spider, and a coupe variant with a Bertone-designed body, the 2600 Sprint.
All body styles in the 2600 series were based on the outgoing 2000 models, inheriting much of the existing styling with only minor adjustments.
The most significant difference compared to the 2000 was the entirely newly designed 2. 6-liter inline six-cylinder engine featuring dual overhead camshafts. Depending on the chosen body style, the engine delivered between 130 and 165 hp.
Despite the excellent new powertrain, the 2600 series was not a commercial success. Alfa Romeo eventually decided to focus on the then-upcoming Giulia series. Interestingly, the 2600 was, to a large extent, essentially a facelift of the 2000, utilizing many parts that originated from the 1900 series of the 1950s.
In total, only 2, 038 Berlina models were produced, compared to just under 7, 000 Sprint models and more than 2, 250 Spider units.
HooG Selections is particularly proud to have acquired this beautiful and, above all, highly original 2600 Berlina from January 1966 through its network.
Finished in a light gray color typical for the period, with a completely original and equally elegant gray fabric interior, this 2600 exudes authenticity.
The original registration documents reveal that the car spent its entire life in Italy, which explains its excellent state of preservation.
This 2600 has developed a gorgeous patina over the years and, more than 50 years after its first registration, still impresses with its driving qualities. The powerful six-cylinder inline engine with 130 hp propels this large sedan with surprising agility, while the five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and precisely.
Given the already low production number of just over 2, 000 units, the 2600 Berlina has become a true rarity today, making this offering an extraordinarily unique opportunity!
