Description
The Volvo 66 is a compact car made by Volvo in the former DAF factory in Born, Limburg between 1975 and 1980. The 66 is an improved version of the DAF 66, after the takeover of DAF-Born by Volvo. The 66 was delivered in a sedan and station wagon version. The Daf 66 Coupé was not continued by Volvo.
The most important changes to the design by Giovanni Michelotti related to the requirements for passive safety of Volvo. Striking were the thicker bumpers, a new 'shift pattern' with neutral position next to forward and reverse, new seats and a safer steering wheel, but the car had also undergone some improvements under the skin. The 66 was equipped with a 45 HP 1100 cc "Cleon-Fonte" engine from Renault and a Variomatic automatic, the top speed was officially 134 km/ h. A special version, the 66 GL, had a 55 HP 1300 cc engine, spotlights and a slightly richer equipment. Its top speed was 145 km/ h. There was also a lot of experimentation with heavier engines, even the Gordini engine from the Alpine.
The DAF 77, originally developed by DAF but never produced, was improved by Volvo and put into production as the Volvo 343. The last Volvo 66s were registered in 1981. Today, the Volvo 66 has become quite rare. Many copies have been used over the years for the famous reversing races.
This Volvo 66 was originally delivered in the Netherlands in 1980. It is a manageable project. The engine is not running at the moment and we have not tested this either.
The car is very complete, there are still various parts in the trunk that of course remain with the car. Who will give this piece of Dutch nostalgia a 3rd (or 4th) life? The Volvo 66 is a compact car made by Volvo in the former DAF factory in Born, Limburg between 1975 and 1980.
