Description
Ford Escort RS Mexico Mk2 – 1978
An absolutely immaculate example of a Mk2 Escort has just arrived into our stock with only 25, 777 miles!
The iconic Mk2 Escort RS Mexico was produced between November 1975 and July 1978
The Mexico was a niche car in the period as it was placed in price and specification between a 1600 Sport and an RS2000 when new, so that meant the Mexico had a very short production run and therefore is now a highly sought-after model amongst collectors.
This car is first registered April 1978 so it is a late example, a very desirable end-of-the-line original.
All the UK models were built in Saarlouis, West Germany. Only around 2500 Mk2 Mexicos were sold over this period. The Mk2 was a replacement for the successful Mk1 Mexico.
This car has benefitted from an engine upgrade to a 1993cc Pinto engine from the original and lesser performance 1593cc Pinto engine. Visually identical from the same era and part of the ‘Pinto’ family, the 1993cc single overhead camshaft engine performs faultlessly and is a recognised period improvement to the 1593cc unit. You can proudly open the bonnet and display this car to any fellow enthusiast at any car show. The top speed of 108mph and 0-60mph in 8. 5 seconds can be expected. Also this car benefits from an upgrade to the five-speed gearbox which with the extra ratio to match the 2. 0 Pinto and it offers light, short and responsive changes. The rear axle is known as a Timken (or English) type, mounted using forward facing radius arms bolted to the chassis rail, and of course, this car is an immaculate example underneath and can be seen in the photographs in concourse condition. Steering is the non-power-assisted full feel period correct rack and pinion. Front suspension is as original design via independent MacPherson struts and dampers. The rear also uses dampers with multi-leaf springs. The Mk2 Mexico ran either steel 5. 5 x 13 inch wheels or optionally 6J x 13 inch four spoke alloy sports wheels, this car sits proudly on a set of those optional alloys and with new tyres
The Mexico was unique because the interior was available only in black, differentiated by front seats ‘Recaro’ style made by Scheel and were the same as those fitted to the early Mk2 RS2000 A sports steering wheel was fitted with a five-white needle instrument cluster, and this car retains those features in perfect condition.
