Description
The Peugeot 306 is in my eyes already a classic – the looks, the French-ness, the way they drive – all make these the epitome of ‘modern classic’ status. Their inherent everyday usability over something like a 205 only adds to the appeal.
The GTI-6 specifically is a rare thing. A practical, 3-door hatchback that you could use every day, but then a hot hatch of the highest order, that will light up any A- or B-road drive as only old French hot hatches can.
The ethos of this era of hot hatch can be summed up in one detail of the GTI-6 – the ‘6’. The extra ratio was a standout feature at the time, but it gave the 306 a genuine close ratio ‘box, not an extra-long 6th ratio for economy purposes on the motorway.
They remain a superb drive to this day, especially this one, which has benefitted from much detailed suspension work over recent years – including the fitment of Bilstein shocks all round. It is lightweight (though with surprisingly heavy steering with plenty of feel), powerful and responds very quickly to your inputs as a driver. The engine revs keenly, sounds great for a 4 pot and is still relatively economical even in 2024. It is also comfortable, has a great heater and space for 4 adults.
This car has a detailed service history, including stamps in the book and stacks of paperwork for more recent spend, including:
Head gasket
Transmission oil
Timing belt in 2023
Engine mounts
Starter motor
Pulleys
Thermostat and housing
Wheels painted
Rear callipers
Tyres all round – Uniroyal Rainsport 5s
Discs and pads
It has clearly been looked after by the previous owners, of which there are 3. The car was MOT’d at the end of October. Condition-wise, it presents very well in its original Moonstone Blue, with black half-Alcantara inside. There are a few stone chips dotted around the front of the car, but nothing significant and some parking scuffs to the rear bumper. The wheels have been recently refurbed and painted in OE silver with new wheel nuts. The worst of the outside is some crazing to the paint on the roof and a slight shade difference between the bonnet and front wings (the latter of which have been repainted). There is also some bubbling around the rear screen, particularly below the rear wiper, a common area on these.
This is a genuine car from a classic era of French hot-hatchery, some say the best example of the breed and I wouldn’t argue with them. You could happily use this example every day if you wished and work on the small bits to improve it, or tuck it away and watch it increase in value, as they surely will continue to do.
