Description

Alfa Giulia Super 1300 in grigio indaco (indigo grey) with dark red interior.
I bought this car about 3 years ago, it was imported from Italy several years before that so is extremely solid, in fact I’ve not seen any evidence of any welding. I have been using it as an almost daily driver (obviously not when there is salt on the roads!) & gradually making it mechanically spot-on. We have rebuilt & rebushed the front suspension, adding adjustable top arms (to facilitate getting factory camber setting) & Koni Classic dampers. We rebuilt the gearbox with new Goetze synchro rings & fitted a new clutch while the box was out. Tyres have been replaced with new (modern compound) Michelin XAS/ Pirelli Cinturato 165 HR 14s.
If you’ve never driven an original Super on factory stock suspension and rims & tyres, you’ve missed a trick! No wonder the Italian police used them!! The LHD with hanging pedals (as this has) being the best of the lot - it handles potholes & rough road surfaces with aplomb. In fact a colleague who used to race a GTA Corsa borrowed this car & was astonished at “how well it drives” - praise indeed. Ok, the 1300 engine isn’t going to set any land speed records, but the lower axle ratio in these cars makes for decent acceleration & the throttle response at 3-5000rpm in 2nd & 3rd makes it great fun on country lanes. It easily cruises at 130-140kph on the motorway & returns 27mpg
When these cars came out in 1963 the spec was top end for a mass produced car: all alloy twin cam engine, 5-speed box, disc brakes all round & then the Super came out in 66 sporting 2 sidedraught carbs (Dellortos on this example) - amazing! And then of course, there’s the 0. 34cd drag coefficient which you do notice - wind the windows down at speed & there’s no buffeting or wind roar….
There are a few small dents & dings around the patinated bodywork, and it has had a repaint many years ago (some evidence on screen rubbers etc) which is now quite tired, but no serious corrosion.
Enjoy it now as it is if you like the look of a “pre-loved” classic displaying its life stories (which seems to be en vogue right now) or we can discuss a glass-out repaint, but if you’re looking for something to hot-rod/ restomod with a fire-breathing 200+bhp Twinspark monster & all the whistles & bells, I don’t think this is the right example to start with - it’s too lovely & original as it is!
