Description
KAWASAKI ER-5 1997 It has a 498 cm³ DOHC twin-cylinder engine based on the design used in the Kawasaki GPZ 500 S and KLE, capable of developing, in this first version, about 51 HP, or 37 kW of power (10 less than the sporty GPZ500s but with more torque at low revs). Top speed is about 180 km/ h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/ h in less than 5″. It is a favourite of riding schools throughout Europe because of its relatively low maintenance costs and because it is generally considered easier for beginners.
The engine is derived from the one that powered the LTD 450 custom bike in the 1980s and more recently the GPZ500S sports bike. Road tests in the trade magazines show that the ER-5 feels comfortable from the first few metres, the engine is always ready from the lowest revs, the seat is comfortable and the handling is good. The 110 tyres at the front and 130 tyres at the rear provide excellent agility, although those used to 160 or 180 tyres will feel almost 'pulled down' once in a corner. The suspension department features a classic telescopic fork with traditional 37 mm stanchions that is comfortable for touring use, a bit soft when you give gas or in emergency braking, the rear double shock absorber is always up to the situation and by adjusting the preload you can adapt it to all riding situations. Brakes are disc at the front and drum at the rear. The Kawasaki ER-. 5 is Euro 2 homologated and weighs around 180 kg. Rare motorbike, almost 30 years old with zero miles, or almost. Never been ridden on the road, still has its original tyres on.
