For sale is a rare and rather desirable E220 Cabriolet. Built in the golden era of Mercedes-Benz.
Previous keeper owned the car since 2010. He purchased it from the well-regarded Classic Mercedes-Benz dealer, Charles Ironside. In fact, there is a magazine copy included in the sale that has this very car advertised for £10, 995.
The car has had various personalised registrations applied by the previous owner during his ownership, hence the high number of owners (B10 UES, AT 5, TO 123, etc). He was a big collector of cars and personalised plates. Once he passed away, the car was then transferred to his wife’s name as part of the Probate.
I have a collection of older Mercedes and BMW models, but the A124 Cabriolet is one that I have never had the pleasure of owning. So, when a family friend informed me about the car, I went to view and agreed a deal to purchase it. The family was sad to let it go due to the sentimental connection, but it had to be sold.
Personally, I think it is one of the prettiest looking Mercedes models of the modern era. The shape oozes class, style and panache. It will still look at home in Monte Carlo and Kensington!
These were very sought after and expensive cars when new, back in 1996. Its replacement, the CLK, was not a patch on this and that reflects with their pricing today.
It has been very well pampered during its life.
In the last year alone, over £8k has been spent at The SL Shop! This included a Major Service, Gearbox Service, Brakes all round, Roof Hood Mechanism Service, etc.
Front Wings & Bonnet also painted by the SL Shop, hence in very clean order.
There are bills totalling £20k over the years.
There is also a 1998 invoice from Mercedes-Benz when the car was sold as a Signature Approved used car.
New roof hood was fitted back in 2009 with Invoice to show this, and is in very good condition.
Mechanically, the car is spot on and wants for nothing. Starts first turn of the key.
Idles in the correct manner. Maintains perfect oil pressure.
There are no leaks. There is no overheating – the temperature gets to the halfway mark and sits there all day long.
The gearbox is smooth and effortless, and changes gear as it should. No clonks or whining.
Brakes stop the car well, with no shuddering or grinding.
The suspension is smooth and supple, which is a legendary trait of the 124 chassis.
Roof is in decent, with no rips, tears or leaks. It operates correctly - raises and lowers as it should. It is quite a sophisticated mechanism for its time and putting the roof down never gets boring.
I have just had 4 brand new Toyo Proxes tyres fitted and a new Wiper Blade.
In very good condition for the year. A few marks and blemishes, as to be expected for the age. Rear bumper has a small scuff on the corner. One small bubble near lower the roof panel. But it is free from rust and rot. Polishes up very well. OSF headlamp has some background discolouring (works fine).
The interior is in good order and there are no horrid rips or tears, but the seat base does have split. The Mushroom leather perfectly complements the Tourmaline Green coachwork. The front seats would benefit from refurb, if you wanted perfection and the leather would spruce up nicely with a deep clean. A couple of bits of trim have cracked, but nothing major. Offside rear passenger window does not work, but this does not affect the roof operation in any way. Central locking is currently inoperative, and the key fob need a re-sync and new batteries.
To summarise, this is a very well maintained E220 Cabriolet. Relatively low mileage and in very presentable condition. Most of these are selling for over £12k, with higher mileage. It won’t be long before these will be £20k+ cars
