Description
MGBGT 1970 model year first registered on 06. 01. 1970. Abingdon used this car on the MG stand at the Scottish Motor show in May of that year.
I have owed the car for 5 years and intended it as a long term investment and a keeper, but I am sure as many will know my eye has wandered to an MGCGT and the B needs to go to a new home. The MG was given a full restoration 2011-2013 (file invoices over £23k to support) specification was standard (or very close). In 2014 it was a cover car for Classic and Sports Car Magazine - See photos (I have a hard copy of the issue).
The car was sold in in 2017/ 18 to the owner that I purchased it from and he undertook a full programme of work on the engine (documented) which included:
-Piper Cam 270 (billet) timed at 108 degrees with vernier timing gear)
-JP pistons plus 80 over size with standard head gasket.
-The shell bearings are all King Tri metal, the main are +20 and big ends +30.
-Notes at the time show a compression test on the 2 June 2019 of:
1 – 230
2 – 240
3 – 235
4 – 230
The cylinder head is by Peter Burgess and the car has been on his rolling road three times (most recently in 2023 I have all the prinouts). Maximum engine power is just under 120BHP with maximum torque at 130lbft.
I purchased the MG as we dropped into C-19 and it was garaged for a while and then I undertook a programme of enhancements:
- Frontline rear axle rebuild with LSD
-Rear disc brake conversion
-Frontline rear suspension 5 link conversion/ build (no more leaf springs
-5 Speed Gearbox conversion (Mazda)
-Transmission tunnel lined with heat reflecting foil
-Full Maniflow performance exhaust with a wrapped manifold
-123 Bluetooth distributor
-Aluminium radiator and electric fan
-Front Suspension conversion (again by Frontline) full telescopic Ken Costello designed kit
SU Carburettors were fully rebuilt by Birmingham SU Carburettors and are fully E10 at the same time I replaced the fuel lines, fuel tank, sender unit and fuel pump to be E10 compliant. I still use E5 but the car runs really well on E10 if needed.
All of the above in invoiced.
I have also rebuild the foams and frame for the drivers seat replace the door cards (Original Spec). It has new Wire Wheels and Blockley Tyres
Most recently the MG has been to Sherwood Restorations near Nottingham and was steam cleaned and Lanolined. This is really well sorted drivers GT.... not a show car I have toured in France and Spain (crossing the Pyrenees) as can be seen from the work completed I had intended to keep it for a long time... someone is going to get an amazing car for next year. I appreciate that the current market is volatile and quite depressed I feel the asking price is fair but I am happy to have a conversation and take (sensible) offers. I am not in a panic to sell.
