Description
Lovely 1958 Velocette Viper in excellent condition having been restored a while ago by a meticulous engineer. Being of similar character, I normally take any classic bike to bare frame and give it a total restoration, but this one really did not require it and as it seems to be all original as far as I am aware, then it may have been a shame to jeopardize that by an extensive rebuild.
Engine
VR 1613 engine number, very responsive, revs as it should, pulls very well. Starts very easily on the ATU with barely any choke. Not much to say other than those who know a Viper will appreciate it. Maintained by me since purchase Jan 2022. Fresh oil, everything lubricated, casings look well. Leaks attended to, everything adjusted as it should be.
Gearbox/ clutch
No issues, fresh oil, quirky Velocette clutch properly adjusted by the book, engages well, smooth action, no slip/ drag.
Frame etc.
RS 11710 frame number, suspension as it should be, full width hubs/ brakes which work very well. Seat excellent.
Paintwork
The best colour combination of chrome/ black tank, gold lining and stainless front mudguard. Waxed regularly. Always attracts favourable comment.
Electrics
Criterion 12V alternator and electrical system which works very well and a great improvement over the standard 6V. Magneto rebuilt by Peter de Kramer in 2021.
Shiny bits
Chrome rims and stainless spokes are very good, plenty of tread on the tyres. Fishtail exhaust is in lovely condition with a nice, crisp note. Oil pipes and other shiny bits all good!
Spares etc
A series of files, a detailed notebook from the PO, drawings, invoices, spare barrel and a few other bits and bobs. I will also throw in anything else relevant I find lying about the garage.
For the uninitiated, these bikes were superbly engineered, handle/ brake superbly, and are well known for their ability to rev far higher than one may think. This one is an extremely good example and needs nothing. Velocettes are fine bikes and were not mass produced. They are arguably for the connoisseur, for aficionados, and those who appreciate the engineering that went into them. It is not mint, but a small amount of work would bring it up. Original registration from 1958. Various paperwork, files, invoices, receipts etc. a box folder. V5C in my name at my address. Private sale, Velocette Owners Club member, a few runs out since purchase. I need the garage space for maybe a classic car so it unfortunately has to go. Condition is very worthy of the asking price. Photos reflect it well. Very good bike courier company local to me who offer an excellent service at competitive prices. Happy to facilitate if required. Excellent example of a fine British single.
